2013 forms updates
on April 6, 2013
Posted by: Ritillion
Overall, I'd use TurboTax again. I ran into problems in downloading and installing updates. Frustrating. It would cause my computer to go into a loop, having to reboot after each attempt. I finally discovered the TurboTax Repair option and once completed, worked like a charm.
What's great about it: easy
What's not so great: difficulty with updates

We have used Turbo Tax for probably 10 years and we have never had a problem.
What's great about it: It is very comprehensive with our somewhat complicated review. Easy
What's not so great: Can't think of any

Easy to use and calculations were quick. I would recommend this software. It would be better if the cost was less as some other tax preperation services were cheaper.

2012 TurboTax Review
on April 6, 2013

I've used TurboTax for years. Last year I tried another brand and didn't like it, so this year I was back to TurboTax. I enjoy using TurboTax to generate my tax statements. I populate the forms iteratively as information becomes available to me: All the while I can see my tax refund/payment information at the top of the screen. I like that it transfers information from last year's return to give me a head start on this years forms. Generally I find the interview style of questions easy to work with (though you have the option to drill directly into the tax form too). There are times when I don't think it is taking my situation into account, but in the end the tax form looks correct. I always do a sanity check on the printed form.
Two things this year didn't display as I expected:
1) I refinanced my mortgage this year and checked a box indicating I was paying off my previous mortgage provider. The screen responded with the amount of money I could deduct this year as if I were continuing with this provider. [One can deduct points spread over the life of the loan, but if you pay off the loan you can deduct the remaining points.] When I reviewed the printed tax form, however, it computed everything correctly and deducted the remaining points. My issue here is with the message printed on the screen.
2) I imported data from my investment accounts. In one case things didn't go right as indicated by results on the screen and I ended up manually typing in the amounts. To my surprise the downloaded data actually was in TurboTax but the way it presented itself was confusing. In short I ended up with the investment listed twice. I caught this by reviewing the printed form and deleted the duplicate entry.
Regardless of if you use software to do your taxes or not, you still need to have your paperwork organized to be successful.
What's great about it: Generally easy to use and navigate to the topic you are interested in
What's not so great: Tweaks needed on a few web screens to display information differently/correctly
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Fantastic, I Hope

My whole life, the old man had done taxes for me. He passed away last fall, and this was the first time I had to do it. I was genuinely impressed by how easy everything was, and my only fear is that I missed/forgot/screwed something up, and I'll get in trouble that way. But, if so, it's on me and not Turbo Tax, because this thing is incredible.
What's great about it: I thought it was so easy to use
What's not so great: My only concern was that I screwed up my own records
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Very well thought out interface. Clear smooth flow thru start to finish. Quick switch to Form View allows IRS forms back to helpful menus.
What's great about it: Smooth Easy Last Year Comparison
What's not so great: Do Not Rember Any
