The real cost of Turbo Tax

TurboTax makes the complicated tax laws fairly simple which is what makes it so popular. The cost of the state downloads are excessive though especially when, like me, you do tax returns for your children who live in other states. Then, you also get charged for e-filing those state returns. Is this convenient? Yes. Is this expensive? Yes. I spend a lot of my refund just to pay the TurboTax fees.
What's great about it: Simple to complete

Above screen examples in Cons: "You're almonst ready to file", "Thank You for Your Payment, Now Let's E-file", "You Just Filed Your Taxes!", "Save a BAckup Copy of Your Tax Data File".

What's great about it: Step-by-step instruction with explanations at needed places.
What's not so great: Need ability to print screens without having to use Microsoft Word Print Screen to print.

Takes the stress out of filing!

I have been using Turbo Tax for 7 years. It is fast, easy, and very thorough. Turbo Tax asks all of the appropriate questions to maximize my deductions. I especially like the Charitable Contribution section which assigns dollar values to all donated items. My Turbo Tax itemized charitable deductions have significantly reduced my taxable income.
What's great about it: Easy to navigate through all income and deduction sections

Got it Done!

Overall makes preparing your taxes easy. Some terms on 1099's aren't the same as used by Turbo Tax, which is confusing to a layperson. Like the ability to ask questions and see responses others have had to the same query.
Keep up the good work!
What's great about it: Step by step and showed amount of refund with every step.
What's not so great: Way you have to keep clicking the back button to go to a different section within the same tab

Underwhelmed this year

I'm used to seeing the form 1040 as I fill out the required information. This year the only way I saw the final product was to go through a zillion button pushes to see a printed copy (finally). I guess it ended up ok, but until I was finished I had no idea what things looked like.
In previous years with turbotax, I entered my brokerage websites and actually "saw" what was downloaded. THis year I'm not sure it all made it because I never "saw" what happened when I entered the brokerage websites.
What's great about it: It went fast
What's not so great: No connection during prep of what the 1040 form looked like

Publish a Student Edition

In both income & deductions sections, during the initial interview, just go through all the questions at one time without having to return to the section trees ( types of income or deductions) - again, just for the initial interview. Then upon review, a customer can go back and address section types (retirement income, foreign income, etc).
Now here's an idea - publish a free or cheap version of TurboTax for students to get them hooked on using your product for the rest of their lives! I'll even be your brand ambassador - I'm a business marketing major, after all! - I'm DEAD SERIOUS ABOUT THIS! - Contact me! Thanks! Emma
