Found my travels through turbo tax to be challenging at times, however with a little more analysis of each item I found my problems were my own. I have used turbo tax for over 12 years now and rarely have had a problem.
What's great about it: Easy , no maze
What's not so great: comprehension of directions at times!

i'm done!!!

only problem i had was the blue "done" or "next" boxes to click for the next page. an accidental double click causes the form to skip two pages instead of just one. this causes a need to go back to a skipped page or item. staggered placement of boxes from page to page would correct this minor problem.
What's great about it: easy to follow and fill out forms
What's not so great: blue "done" boxes align on following pages

Importing 1099s: an enhancement or a pain?
on April 1, 2013
Posted by: lkwa
I've been using TurboTax since 1997 or earlier. Before that, I used my own spreadsheets. It has improved gradually over the years, both in capability, clearity of questions, and navigation. My biggest ftrustration now is that, when adding a new 1099-INT or 1099-DIV, the default method is "Import from bank or brokerage". The software appears to attempt to update the list of banks over the internet before allowing you to proceed. I often work on a laptop without having internet access or where it is not available. This hangs up the software while it attempts to establish an internet connection, sometimes preventing me from proceeding - untill I turn on my wi-fi. I recommend that the default choice be "I'll type it myself', and then allow someone with an internet connection to then select an Import choice. Or have the software check for an internet connection, then make "I'll type it myself" the default if no interent connection is detected (or vise versa).
Questions on sale of a rental property fails to clarify that by house, you mean the value of structures excluding land. not land + structures combined. To some, the default meaning of "house" includes both house and property.
Questions on IRA contributions are much clearer than in earlier versions.
What's great about it: Adding capability to download and import 1099's is a time saver.
What's not so great: Making import of 1099's the default selection is a pain, especially when not connected to internet

Good Product

This is the third year that I have used Turbo Tax. For the twelve years prior to that I used a professional accountant to do my tax returns and spent a lot more for the service than I do for this software.
What's great about it: Simple and easy to use. Appears to maximize returns.
What's not so great: None of note
Pros: I moved

Turbo Tax Deluxe

Turbo Tax is super easy to use, it holds your hand and walks you through everything. Super simple and straight forward, perfect for people who just don't hve a lot of experience filing taxes. It's a bit all or nothing though, either you know what youre looking for from the start or you have to go through EVERYTHING; which takes a while.
What's great about it: Easy to use, detailed
What's not so great: Somewhat lengthy
