My TurboTax Experience

Very intuitive product! It steps you through the process of filling out your tax return for the most common tax entries. Use this product for years. I first started using TurboTax with my Mac IIsi and I have never missed a year doing my taxes with the product since that time. Had to deal with doing the tax return for brother who died in 2011 and then deal with the final financial matters associated with losses from the estate tax return. Had minor issues with the terminology and how to log some of the data, but once I received coaching from the estate attorney on the manual forms, I found out how to do it quickly within TurboTax and the Step-by-Step methods. Even gave me the opportunity to upgrade to the next higher version if I need additional assistance.
What's great about it: Very intuitive product!

Peace of Mind

I feel confident that all the tax laws are being followed and that I am getting all the benefits allowed for me in my situation. The steps are clear and easy to follow without being an accountant or tax expert. If you enter something incorrectly or miss something Turbo Tax prompts you to correct/complete the form.
What's great about it: Turbo Tax is an affordable way to file income taxes and still feel that all the details have been addressed.

I love that I can import the previous year's return information and avoid having to enter the redundant information manually. Being able to import all of the investment account information is really a time saver. The whole experience is painless.
What's great about it: Easy to enter the necessary information.
What's not so great: None that I can think of.

Cuts through the IRS complexities

For most of the straight forward things Turbo-Tax can streamline the processing of data entry and getting the data into the right form fields for the user. It offers a lot of helpful explanations in its online help to answer most of the obvious questions that might come up. And it explains the complex definitions and situations and exceptions that the tax laws and the IRS procedures make difficult.
The EasyStep dialog can get you past a lot of stuff that doesn't apply to you so you can pay attention to what you actually need to handle.
In my experience (and I have been using TurboTax for over 20 years) the developers have not always been given time to get all the complexities of the state tax forms and regulations into the program with the degree of quality and attention to detail that they have been able to apply to the federal forms.
As an example of where the tricky state forms have given TurboTax problems let me tell you about the situation for MA filers who are beneficiaries of in-state trust funds. We receive the K-1 form from the trust but have to transfer the data into the program during the Federal EasyStep process. We do indeed owe federal tax on the income declared by the trust but because the trustees pay the state taxes for us directly to the MA Dept of Revenue we the beneficiaries don't have to pay them ourselves. Only in the past few years has TurboTax been able to handle this "special" situation. I used to have to do some manual adjustments to the forms directly because the EasyStep processing couldn't figure out how to handle it. I'm glad to say that is no longer the case.
So the moral of this is to get informed by reading the FAQs that apply to your situation and then don't put complete trust in the program but go over the forms yourself during the final review to be sure that nothing has been left out or mishandled. One of the helpful features when you are doing your own review is the ability to inquire of the program where the data it has entered into a particular field of a form was derived from.
So the bottom line is this: Filing taxes will never be fun or easy but TurboTax makes it tolerable for me, gives me some confidence that I have conformed with the IRS laws and regulations properly and saves me from having to pay hundreds of dollars to an accountant or tax preparation service. And this year it took me a total of about 10 hours spread over three separate sessions! That's like earning $40/hour!
What's great about it: Avoids making me spend a lot of time unnecessarily on forms that don't apply to my situation.
What's not so great: When it gets tricky it gets hard to understand
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

I have used TT and Quicken for years. I would be lost without it. TT makes deprecation so much easier, I used to spend long hours reading IRS manuals because, I refuse to pay someone to screw up my taxes. This saves me a lot of time
What's great about it: max deductions; can do what if with TT
What's not so great: a little lacking with HSA info
