Disconnect with IRS and Arkansas
on February 5, 2013
Posted by: muzzypat
State was rejected because TurboTax allowed an AR form 8453 (cannot be e-filed) to go through process.... this form should automatically be flagged through filing process so it doesn't go into the AR e-file packet.
What's great about it: Fed went fine.
What's not so great: AR got rejected because of software glitch

State Section Bug
on February 5, 2013
Posted by: PapawandMamaw
I wanted to have my state refund "Direct Deposited". To do this I had to pretend I wanted to e-file to enter my Routing and Account numbers. Then backed out of that section to avoid paying the charge for e-filing a state return..
What's great about it: Good Product
What's not so great: State section "Direct Deposite" problem

The product worked just as advertised. I paid for my state e-file as advertised, not a penny more.
What's great about it: The step by step questions and reviews made it easy

Better each year
on February 5, 2013

Last year I switched from the Tax Cut software to Turbo Tax. It was a little painful because I had to reenter a lot of information. This year I was able to carry over all that info, greatly reducing the time spent preparing my taxes. I was done within minutes of receiving my last W-2s and 1099s!!!!!
What's great about it: Easily carried info from last years return.
What's not so great: Had to manually locate tax files from the on-line version used last year.

problems

Redundant entries needed in some sections.
Tax program should be piloted by ordinary tax payers not experts who already know what the answers must be.
What's great about it: Have been using for years and found old problems fixed but new ones created.
What's not so great: TurboTax unable to file state return because it included a form that could not be accepted by Ohio

Shortcomings in Medical Deduction data entry
on February 5, 2013
Posted by: Retired98765
Medical should be more like the detailed data collection that Turbo-Tax uses for Charitable Deductions. Turbo-Tax needs to add step-by-step screens for collecting medical expense information.
-- Screen for each individual physician/medical care giver, collecting both co-pays, address, round-trip mileage per visit, dates of visits.
-- Screen to collect co-pays for each pharmacy and each family member, address of that pharmacy, and round-trip mileage to drop off prescriptions & to pick up medications, and number of trips per year.
-- Screen for each medical insurance policy.
Current Turbo-tax software features pertaining to medical expenses causes me to have to do too much off-line data collection and summary.
What's great about it: Step-by-step entries
What's not so great: Needs to expand the step-by-step screens for medical expenses.
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

Always LIke Using Turbo Tax
on February 5, 2013

It makes sense to me that Turbo Tax doesn't include the form 706 for estate tax or the 1041 for estate income tax since they are so seldom used. However, once I indicated that I was filing for someone who was deceased, a brief tutorial asking the right questions would have been nice. For example, are the deceased's assets over $5M? If so, you will need to file form 706 (not included). It took me some time searching both your Help feature and the IRS website to make sure I did not need to file either of these forms. Also, some instructions on signing the forms.
What's great about it: Easy to use, consistent from year to year
What's not so great: Could have used more help filing for deceased mother
