Quality tax software
on April 15, 2013
Posted by: cwest169
I rate this software, which I have used for over five years, as excellent. It covers all the bases and is complete and well thought-out. I highly recommend this to others, including CPA's, which I am.
What's great about it: Most situations considered and well laid out
What's not so great: Federal to State data transfer not always in sync
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Return Rejected X3
on October 3, 2013
Posted by: OneCoolGMa
Rejected returns say PIN can't be used but once. I have checked every SS# entry on returns; all are correct. I went to IRS for our PINs and entered those. Turbo Tax says it will help me "fix it." Ha! I have just filed electronically for the last time this year. If it is rejected - if that can be done during our ridiculous shutdown -I will mail it in. Please fix this bug before next year. Thank you.
What's great about it: I love Turbo Tax! I have used it for at least 15 years. I don't plan to change that. BUT ...
What's not so great: This year I cannot get my Fed and AL return accepted. There are no errors on review.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Got the job done- after a lot of extra effort
on October 3, 2013

I knew from the beginning that 2012 would be a challenging tax year for me and my new husband. There were a number of factors I knew would need to be properly dealt with to get us the best returns for both federal and state. However, I didn't anticipate that getting the software to cooperate with me would be so challenging. I spent a ton of time consulting the forums when various questions came up during our tax prep process. Sometimes there were answers completed by other users, and sometimes my husband and I had to do a lot of Googling, reading through IRS bulletins, and stressing over the confusing legal jargon. Just to give you an idea of the factors to consider: 1) husband= military member, deployed shortly after marriage and before I could get my residency to match his, 2) I moved from Virginia to California mid-year to marry the guy, and quickly quit the job I was able to temporarily take with me (giving me taxable income in 2 states), 3) Husband is neither a CA or VA resident, but I didn't share his state of residency (WA), so I didn't qualify for most of the military spouse exemptions. 4) I did not fully adapt CA residency, so I didn't know what I needed to do tax-wise given my military status.
I have had a very positive experience working with TurboTax before, so I was already inclined to use it despite my misgivings about whether they would be able to work through our unique circumstances. To qualm my fears, I discussed it with our military-friendly bank, who encouraged us to use it for our tax prep this year, promising it would easily work through our unique considerations. It was not easy. We wanted to prepare federal taxes together, but found out that in order to prepare state filings that did not consider my husband's military pay (since he is a WA resident, he did not need to pay state taxes on these), we needed to file these separately. However, the advanced online version we purchased did not allow this option, and after much research through the forums and online, we found out we had to also get the CD version of TurboTax. Apparently, the online version does not allow us to file federal together and state separately. After obtaining a copy of TurboTax CD version, we then had to prepare a mock version of our federal taxes there as married filing separately to allow the program to continue on to process our state taxes as married filing separately. It was so confusing, and I don't even think I can explain it here because my brain is so scrambled from the 3 weekends I have spent on this.
We would have liked to have known that the online version would not properly work for our situation before purchasing it unnecessarily. We would have also liked for the software to have allowed us to read through/review/update specific questions without making us click through the entirety of other sections that we knew we didn't need to change anything on. We would have also liked to have had more robust explanations for several of the parts of the tax prep software, most notably in sections regarding residency, how to prepare for more than two states, military spouse and residency status, home office deduction eligibility, and community property definitions on state levels. All that said, we look like we are going to be able to finish things, and I hope to God that all of my reading and analysis was correctly comprehended so our tax return is completely correct beyond reproach.
As for whether I would recommend this for others, I would say it depends. Personally, I would use TurboTax again for a "normal" tax year, but wouldn't recommend it for someone with an unusual tax situation like ours unless you are experienced in tax prep or ready to roll your sleeves up and do some heavy reading and analysis.
What's great about it: Works great for typical tax situations
What's not so great: Doesn't work as well for non-cookie-cutter situations
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion), I moved

Didn't warn of override!
on October 11, 2013
Posted by: BobAtl
By not warning me of override during error scans, TTax caused me to underestimate payment due when I filed for automatic extension. I expect interest charge from IRS.
Previous years identified overrides in error checks. I use overrides to approximate amounts of interest, etc., while calculating January estimated tax payment and when filing for extension. In past TTax reminded me of each override. I almost submitted final return with override.
What's great about it: Comprehensive
What's not so great: Didn't warn of override

My Personal tax Guide
on October 15, 2013

Turbo Tax is readily and widely available and is fairly priced. For those of us who are not tech savvy, it is a very easy program to follow. I've used Turbo Tax in the past, but last year I tried another software. Never again! Turbo Tax is quick, easy, and reliable.
What's great about it: I like the fact that the sopftware was written to appear as if a real person was here with me, guiding and encouragingme
What's not so great: N/A

Not ready for market
on November 3, 2013

2012 Turbotax was not ready for market. The forms and the secondary forms were not available when I did my taxes. I did them early and finally I left my computer on all night and forms miraclally the next day the appeared. I waited until the rush was over and then I talked to an IRS rep who was very helpful
What's great about it: Very little
What's not so great: Not ready for market

I had problems printing two sets, one after another. Some pages had black lines across. Had to save and then print again.
