Overall I love this product. It gives me the confidence to do my own taxes and by doing so I can see what tax options I am taking advantage of and which ones I could use in years to come.
What's great about it: Detailed explanations along the way
What's not so great: Didn't auto prompt me for DIV & INT like it has in years past

Turbo Tax is #1

I have been using Turbo Tax for quite a few years now. I've gone from being a single renter to a married home owner. Turbo Tax makes it easy to do your taxes and maximizes your refund while reducing your chances of being audited. I like the fact that I can let it guide me so I don't miss any deductions. Turbo Tax hasn't let me down yet in all the years I've used it.
What's great about it: Easy to use
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)

WELL I THINK THE PREVIOUS YEAR WAS EASIER TO DEAL WITH TURBO TAX, SEEMS A LITTLE LONGER THIS YEAR, AND WHEN I TRIED TO GO BACK TO EDIT INFORMATION, COMING BACK TO WHERE I WAS IT TOOK TOO LONG AND HECTIC, WE SHOULD BE ABBLE TO GO BACK EASIER AND SOONER.
What's great about it: EASY TO FOLLOW
What's not so great: TOO LONG OR TOO DETAILED FOR MY FILING

Simple taxes, simple stuff

I have used TurboTax for my taxes since, hmmm, 2000 or so. It has always been fairly straight forward and helps guide you through the process quite painlessly. The 2012 edition is not notably different from that of previous years (though I did not miss the somewhat annoying video interruptions of some past years). If you've used it before, it imports your personal data from previous years, streamlining that portion of the process almost effortlessly. The program then leads you step by step through income and possible deductions. A nice feature is being able to import my W2 directly from my current employer. If you are in a position to benefit from more than the standard deduction, for example, if you own a home or are self-employed, it can help lead you through the morass of the tax code to maximize your potential return or minimize liability. Itemizing deductions is a breeze if you are prepared with the information.
However, if your situation is pretty simple, it's really not much more trouble to fill out the tax form yourself without the intervention of TurboTax and Intuit. During my fluctuating tax situation over the last decade ( homeowner, student, worker, moving, self-employed, unemployed, moving and working again) I have done my taxes by hand from time to time for comparison and found TT really did nothing I couldn't do myself when all I had was income and taxes, but it really does help with more complex situations. One year, we had an accountant prepare our taxes due to combined complications of moving, home sales, inheritance, etc., and I separately prepared our taxes with TurboTax - and the results were very close. One irritating thing this year is that I had minimum of income resulting from self-employment, and the program retained schedule C vehicle usage for business from the previous year, even though I indicated I did not use vehicles for business purposes - and I had to fill that schedule out before the program would check out with no errors. It was painful for all of 5 minutes.
The biggest plus of TurboTax is that it is one of the easiest ways to file electronically even if you owe money; if getting a refund, it is aces, as it usually comes back quickly and straight to your bank - and you have love that. I filed my taxes today, and even before I finished this review, both my state and federal returns were accepted.
It is a very good product, despite some small grievances here and there, if you have a need for help with more complex tax situations. Otherwise, I'd say save the $ and buy a nice bottle of wine. If you do have a more complex situation, buy the wine anyway for all the headaches TurboTax may help you to avoid.
What's great about it: Easy to use, takes data from previous years, leads you step by step, decent explanatory content
What's not so great: Explanatory content just decent, not great, but at least is not annoying either
Pros: My job status changed this year (switched jobs, lost a job, got a raise or promotion)
