Great Compactor

If you have shopped for trash compactors, you know that they are not cheap. This one was at the lower end of the cost curve. But I was buying it to replace one that was in the house when I bought the house. The house was built in '84 and I'm sure the compactor was in the house at that time. It was a similar Whirlpool. If that one lasted 29 years before it stopped working, I was comfortable replacing it with the same though updated model. The compactor is sleek and beautiful. It was easy to install and can be disabled to prevent children from playing with it. I am also pleased with the sound levels. I can't say that it is exactly quiet but I don't think any compactor is. What I can say is that it is a vast improvement over the one I replaced. And, after purchasing several Whirlpool products, I have found their quality and reliability to be very high.

This is our 4th trash compactor we have lived in a home with a Kenmore, Kitchen Aid, Jenn Aire and this Whirlpool. This is undoubtedly our worst one ever!We didn't realize it didn't have the extra-compact feature or the option to turn off the machine at the precise moment to keep the ram rod engaged. We have to empty it twice as often as the others which had either the feature or allowed you to turn off and keep it engaged.Often when we believe the door is closed it will open and make a horrific noise until we run to it and shut the door again so as to stop it from compacting! If the door isn't shut, even when it appears to be, it will make the same awful noise as it tries to begin compacting???The door is quite flimsy and feels cheaply built and not very durable.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

One major shortcoming

With the lower front foot switch, the front cabinet is not adequately strengthened. It is tinney and very flexible. For a product of this cost a little added structure would give it a much better feel. If you are considering purchaseing this item be sure and see it in person prior to buying. Other than this it works great and has great compacting power.
