TurboTax Perhaps Doesn't Get It

I've been using TurboTax for over 30 years and have never had a problem until the 2024 filing. There was an apparent bug in the software that did not allow me and presumably others to properly view and confirm that the allowed $3000 deduction from ordinary income because of a prior year's capital loss carry-forward had been applied. I called TurboTax, and the first agent was helpful, but our call was cut off midstream. I called again and spoke to another helpful agent, but she had to transfer me to the Resolution Department. There, I spoke to a competent, intelligent and extremely helpful agent named Kimball. With patience and persistence, he determined that the software flaw was in fact not allowing the display of the $3000 deduction but that the calculations and information were correct and would be reflected in my return. His determination was spot-on, and my return has been successfully filed. Between the time I spent online trying to figure out what was going on myself and the time I spent on the phone with the three TurboTax agents, I probably wasted three hours of my time. The above rating was referred to as an "Overall Product Rating," thus my 1 out of 5. An "Overall Staff Rating" would have been 5 out of 5. I have already requested, and I will request again here, that TurboTax refund back to my credit card the $99+tax that I had to pay, for what I believe is called TurboTax Premium, in order to file my tax return online. I would find a refusal on their part to do so to be not only shocking, but also an indication that in the highly competitive world in which we live, TurboTax is not customer-centric and simply "doesn't get it."

I’ve never experienced a piece of software so determined to make the simplest tax return feel like an advanced calculus exam. From the frustrating user interface that hides important options behind a maze of unnecessary steps, to the suspiciously insistent add-ons that make you feel like you’re getting conned, TurboTax manages to disappoint on every level.
Not only does the program constantly interrupt you to buy more “upgrades” (which ends up costing way more than you’d expect), but its so-called “help” sections often feel about as useful as random internet pop-ups—cluttered, vague, and borderline condescending. When you do try to track down a real, helpful answer, you’ll end up digging through an endless FAQ labyrinth that never quite addresses your actual question.
What’s worse, the application has a knack for freezing or crashing right when you’re almost done, forcing you to painstakingly re-enter all your information. And if, by some small miracle, you manage to wrestle your forms and numbers into submission, the final fees and charges come at you like a hidden tax (ironic, right?).
Overall, TurboTax manages to transform an already stressful task into an infuriating fiasco. I’d gladly dig out an old typewriter and file by carrier pigeon if it meant never having to wrestle with this program again. If TurboTax is your only option, you might want to start budgeting for aspirin and therapy sessions—because you’re definitely going to need them.

Two stars for ease of filing. Minus three for the sneaky ways they try to upgrade users, and attempt to trick users into giving away their personal information. There were several interstitial screens that make it seem like giving away your data and/or paying out the nose for upgrades are mandatory--especially if you're a tired, stressed out, or inattentive user. I find these business practices reprehensible. Doesn't Intuit have enough money, and enough access to user data? I get that I'm paying a price for convenience, and I was happy enough to do so for the first few years I used TurboTax. But in recent years, I've been really grossed out by how they present certain completely optional steps as necessary to completing one's e-file. Keep reading the small print and explanations, and protect your data and money!
