TurboTax is mediocre

TurboTax gets more painful to use each year, in terms of its internal features. There are many prompts and nag screens that try to upsell you and cross sell additional Intuit services. These add a little time and a lot of irritation for negative benefit. The state return for Massachusetts is poorly supported with minimal explanation of differences between MA and Federal tax rules. The TurboTax help and support system is quite poor and limited mainly to explaining the weird menu structure that makes it hard to navigate around the return when it is being prepared. However, I found that I could very easily get much more useful help by having a Gemini chatbot window open on my secondary screen. This provided answers to many questions where Turbotax sends you to review superficial help screens and then to a bulletin board community answers page. Unfortunately the switching cost to move away from Turbotax is high, so I will continue to use the product but I'd advise people with reasonably complicated tax circumstances to consider other products carefully before committing to Turbotax
