TurboTax Is ‘Affordable’… Until You Actually Use I

TurboTax might be the most aggressively upsold piece of software I’ve ever used.
It starts simple enough—$79, fine. Then somewhere along the way it becomes $139. Then, right at the finish line, they tack on another $40 just to submit. At no point does it feel transparent; it feels like you’re being slowly walked deeper into a checkout funnel where the real price only reveals itself once you’ve already invested the time and don’t want to start over.
Even worse is the constant push to upgrade to “MAX.” I said no the first time. And the second time. And the third time. Yet it keeps coming back—like someone at a bar who won’t take the hint. It doesn’t feel helpful; it feels manipulative. The software repeatedly interrupts your workflow to upsell something you’ve already declined, clearly hoping you’ll eventually give in out of fatigue.
For something as essential and stressful as filing taxes, this kind of experience is the opposite of what people need. It’s not just expensive—it’s structured in a way that makes you feel cornered into paying more than you expected.
If you value transparency and a straightforward process, this isn’t it.
