Dep/non-dep status for young adults living at home
on March 23, 2025

There is an issue regarding adult children living at home, working, not contributing to the expenses of the home, filing a tax return and then not being claimed as dependent, when indeed they are. On my initial submission; everything was good to go, then i got a rejection for not completing a form that should have been submitted, (of which I did); then I got repeated rejections after that because my 19 yo daughter, of whom I have provided the majority of care (filed her tax return prior to me and submitted it as non-dependent; granted, she does have a job, but she also goes to school full-time and works part-time; of which I do not request any financial subsidy from her because of this). However, when I answered all of the questions in turbo tax, the software app classified her as "dependent", which greatly increased my return. However, because she had already filed has non-dependent, my return kept getting rejected and I was unable to determine what was wrong with my return. Eventually, I just removed her from the return alltogether in order to get it submitted. Took me several times to figure out how to do this. It would be helpful if Turbo Tax could direct me to the correct area on the return to add her, but not claim her as a dependent. I imagine this will also be the case next year, because my 20 yo son has started working full-time and is no longer attending school, yet still living at home and not providing any financial support. So, is he dependent?
Pros: My employment status changed this year

too many charges and fees, it would be better to be upfront to not waste time.

Expensive. Especially since most of the information is imported from the Federal tax return anyways.
