I have been a consumer of the Turbo Tax brand for the past five tax seasons. I find it to be extremely adaptive and helpful in prompting me in how to execute filing and preparing my simple returns. Therefore I highly recommend others to try the product!

I have used Turbo tax for our returns for a number of years, but I preferred the CD version. Cost of CD was also less for the same results

Turbotax: A forced cost for self-preparers, Beware
on March 17, 2025

I only use TT because the IRS does not want me to paper file (last time I did they took 8 months to falsely claim I did not put my children's SS#'s on the form, then took another 4 to handle my re-return), and there is no free option to file using a software program where I would simply fill in tax forms electronically.
TT takes much longer. It is not clear when the buttons at the bottom are about to boot you back to a summary page, or take you down a rabbit hole of further questions.
Somehow they know you had a 1099 from Anytown Bank last year, but hit the 'edit' button and you are sent back to the income summary page....kinda thought the 'intuition' would have kicked in that I want to add THIS years' 1099 information. Nope, that is not available, I should've hit a button much earlier on saying 'more to add', even though on that screen I didn't, because I was done adding income from a different source. Very unclear, confoundingly repetitive and way too much BS review feel good screens you have to wait around before you can click 'continue' on.
The frequent requests to upgrade the services I am forced to pay for every time I log in are obnoxious, but not as obnoxious as the little shell game they played with the 'share my information' screen. Somehow to get through that question I have to fill in my name, my wife's name, then hit 'deny'...not once but twice. It is borderline criminally misleading.
The US has two major issues. One: Online Privacy. Two: the Byzantine IRS code Tubotax is part of the problem and has every reason to keep things that way, literally in possession of my most sensitive financial information and trying desperately hard to get my permission to data-mine it with AI bots for god knows what.
