The IRS has all the information they need to file taxes on behalf of citizens, but companies like TurboTax lobby to keep us hostage so we all have to pay them $100 for the pleasure of doing our taxes ourselves.
I have used Intuit professional and regular TurboTax since 2004, I wouldn't use any other product. It is great having last year's info auto-populated, and the help section is great at answering questions.
Import process was flawed, making a bad experience

Was good, until the importing function refused to import a 1099-int address correctly. Kept getting the state wrong and bank addresses wrong. Had to muck my way through deleting it and manually reading it. Not good. Tried multiple times to import, and it made the same mistakes. And since I can't see the addresses, or edit the forms directly, had to delete and manually enter. And the help robot was worthless in answering questions to address the issue.
TurboTax is one of the most popular tax preparation software options, known for its intuitive interface and step-by-step guidance. Whether you're filing a simple return or handling more complex tax situations, TurboTax makes the process straightforward with features like automatic W-2 imports, error checking, and real-time refund calculations.
Pros: ✔ User-Friendly Interface – The guided, interview-style process makes filing taxes easy, even for beginners. ✔ Smart Features – TurboTax imports tax documents, tracks deductions, and maximizes credits. ✔ Accuracy Guarantee – Built-in audit detection flags potential mistakes before filing. ✔ Multiple Support Options – Live CPA assistance (for an extra fee) and a strong knowledge base.
Cons: ❌ Costly for Complex Returns – While there’s a free version, many users quickly find they need to upgrade. ❌ Upselling Can Be Annoying – The software frequently pushes paid features. ❌ Limited Free Filing – Many users who expect to file for free end up paying due to restrictions.
Final Verdict: TurboTax is an excellent choice for those who want a guided, stress-free tax filing experience. However, the cost can add up, especially for users with itemized deductions, self-employment income, or multiple income sources. If you’re looking for a simple and efficient way to file your taxes, TurboTax is a top-tier option—but be prepared for potential upsells.
