Turbo Tax is alright

I had to file an amended return as I received a 1099 -int after I had already filed. It took me over an hour to find the correct screen to enter the information. I hadn't claimed any interest in my first filing so no interest/dividend section came up. I had to keep asking in different ways how to enter interest income. UGH And I can't submit this review with out a nickname? Why?
I have some very detailed feedback to share. I've been using TurboTax since the 1990's and I know you change it some every year. Some things are better as if for the first time in 10 years I could easily find the SEP (like a Roth IRA) and enter in the numbers. If I didn't know TurboTax as well as I do, I found the format made it really easy at the beginning to skip big sections as it said "We'll come back to that" and then it never did. I had to navigate myself back to the 1099 misc forms. I also want you to know that I could have ended up with a $13,000 refund as there was an error and if I wasn't savvy it would have never been caught. I just knew my tax situation and I knew that was wrong and spent a very long time going through each page until I could find it. I don't think the average person would have been able to find it as I could only find it after I printed out the forms and worksheets. By the way, thank you for that option. The actual 1099 misc form did not show up on the list of income because I had mistakenly put the information in box 4 instead of 6. TurboTax would have allowed me to slip that through with no errors and I would have spent it were I not savvy about my tax situation. I know you have to make a product that fits many people's needs but there was something about this layout, that if a person was using TurboTax for the first time I think they would have been more lost. I also spoke to other people, each who had their own little story about how TurboTax was not as user friendly this year. I did not like the change of gathering the expenses BEFORE you gathered my income. I'd rather put in my income, see the worst case scenario and then watch it tick down as I enter my expenses. As a self employed person, your time estimates are way off, expecting it to take 2 hours when it more likely takes 24 hours. I did not like being kicked off as often as I was, as I read the question, go gather that data, read the next question, go gather that data. It kept kicking me off and with the multifaceted check in it takes a while to get back on. Only once did I see the figure of comparing standard deduction compared to itemizing. And after I put in some figures and went back to that page, it no longer showed me the amount (I was on the medical area of itemizing). I would like to see the figure for myself as I know how close I am if it's worth it to go get more numbers (dental, vision, prescriptions, etc). Please make the itemizing comparison to standard deduction available as we are working on it. A "Do you think you have ???? amount of deductions in this area? If not you may want to skip this. If you are not sure then answer the following questions. The good thing you did was make the video that showed how to use TurboTax so I knew where to go to adjust the form that was wrong. There was also another spot where numbers were pulled forward and I have never used that section, I think it was depreciation. I use the method where I deduct the full amount in the year I buy it so those numbers should not have been brought forward. For new people I would put a heading above the pencil and the trash as people like my Mother don't know that the pencil would be the way you get into that section. It doesn't look like a button to open that area and it was not labeled. Also I think this is regarding Form 8829. On page 5 of 529 of the IRS book it says that tax prep fees and the software can no longer be deducted on taxes and yet you still have a question that asks for that amount. My notes are kind of sloppy on that so I hope you can find what I was referencing. When I was at the recap, I would have liked to print some of those pages so either a note that says there will be an opportunity to print it later or a print button for the summary. Lastly, the printing the receipt for paying for the program does not play nice with Safari and only wants to print a blank page. This was not a favorite year for TurboTax design. I loved it in the late 90's. I have often given it 5 stars but this year I've talked to 4 other people that had issues with one area or another. I hope your user interface people gain some experience and actually use the product. And that you have a team of people, some of them running small businesses, to provide user feedback. Other than that, for a approximate 45 year user of TurboTax, I appreciate what you all do behind the scenes and I share the feedback from a user perspective more as constructive feedback to the programers. Taxes would not be as easy without your program. This is not intended to be a review to the general public.
