TurboTax 2024: Still Easy to Use, But Accuracy Iss

I’ve been using TurboTax for several years, and for the 2024 filing season, I’d give it 3.5 out of 5 stars. The platform remains easy to use, and I appreciate how it imports my prior year’s information seamlessly. However, I ran into some frustrating issues that made this year’s experience more time-consuming.
First, TurboTax failed to properly upload all 1099 forms from my wife’s 1099 consolidated statement. It didn’t separate the 1099-DIV from the 1099-INT and 1099-B, which required manual review and adjustments.
Another major issue was with my Backdoor Roth contribution. After the initial review, TurboTax indicated that my federal return was fine, but it missed the deduction section related to my 1099-R, which incorrectly made the full amount taxable. I had to manually go back, review the deduction section, and fix the error.
Because of these issues, I spent more time this year comparing my 1040 to previous returns using TurboTax’s tool function to ensure no other discrepancies. I wish the software was better at detecting year-over-year changes and flagged potential inconsistencies earlier in the review process. The tax owed amount changed significantly once I caught the mistake, which was frustrating.
Overall, TurboTax still offers a user-friendly experience, but the lack of accuracy in detecting key deductions and proper 1099 imports made this year’s process more tedious than expected. I hope they improve their detection algorithms in future updates.
