changes welcome / not welcome

I liked the ability to take a picture of my forms and let you upload them. Only had a couple of things I had to fix. Good job there. Didn't like that I had to search to change some personal info. Also, the combining of incomes in categories was initially confusing. It also double entered a category when I had to update the dollar amount from last year.

Couldn't file my return until I upgraded the service at the end which didn't change the refund value at all. They found a great way to take more of your money without giving any additional help

Use TurboTax Mindfully

It is disappointing to realize a company is charging this much (and effectively scamming customers by changing the price from $39 at the beginning to an unexplained $49 at the end - having never selected an upgrade nor paying using the tax return, mind you) for the service in cases where taxes are extremely simple (two incomes, and standard deduction). There is a free option, but TurboTax masterfully finds ways of hiding it, or directing you down a one-way path to the paid version. My wife and I have used it for previous years, but I really can't explain to myself, or anyone else, why. It also takes significantly longer (in the cases of simple tax returns) than it would to just fill out the form.
I suggest using the website rather than the app, because the app is much slower, and loses progress for no apparent reason. On the other hand, it won't matter which you pick if you're trying to minimize the mindless upselling attempts.
