I can usually do my own (simple) tax returns but at times I additionally used an inexpensive tax return program to confirm my own results. From 2017 thru 2023 I just let a CPA/PA do our taxes. We were dual state and also transitioned to retired. I used the most basic on-line TurboTax expecting it to be the best low-cost solution. I was somewhat disappointed in the on-line program. First off it did not present product offerings and pricing until you started filing. Not too big an issue since a web search provided that. One thing that caused me a lot of time was a 1099-R upload for which the website created an incorrect payer state. I tried the "Help" results without success. It should have just let me update the payer state field. One other thing that took up some time to research (again, the "Help" did not hold the answer) was one 1099-R being missing Box 16, State distribution. (New York State return issue.) Two of my three 1099-R forms did not have Box 16 but only one caused an exception. Personally, I could not figure out how to calculate taxable Social Security income or what to do with New York City "FRINGE".
