I wrote a big ole rant about TT, and deleted it. It's a bunch of upsells, and tries really hard to farm personal information that it doesn't have to (during the payment part)
It's an almost necessary evil, and I hate it. Not one year have I looked forward to using TT.
Use at your own discretion. Better yet, knuckle down and use the IRS website. I wish I had.
Still confusing. I still am not sure if I filled everything out correctly. I couldn't find forms for this years pension statement, but it's the same as last year. I lost my father last summer and haven't been especially great about hanging onto every bit of paperwork that came in the mail- nothing related to him , I've never gotten an inheritance from any of them- I mean taking care of my own paperwork. I would much rather pay turbo tax to do the whole thing for me but that still necessitates the need for keeping track of every bit of paperwork anyone sends here. I get medi-caid for health insurance, the questions about health insurance were confusing, I am pretty sure medi-caid is not in the covered california marketplace but I'm not sure I filled that out ok. The company that handles the pension, I don't know if they even sent me anything this year re taxes. This situation with me and all this paperwork also illustrates the problem with mental health, being able to get any any help and the situation with health care in the united states period. If a person states, 'I'm having trouble with keeping track of all this stuff', then that person sort of gets in 'trouble' as if they are not competent when really they are isolated and depressed. Making things easier to keep track of, all the paperwork is paramount. If we could submit these things to turbotax using a QR code AS we receive them, or there were a checkbox somewhere when you start working somewhere -or from your bank or pension institution 'send to turbo tax' it would make dealing with tax stuff much easier at the close of the tax year. I truly do not know if I did my form correctly or had all the updated forms. I did the best I could considering my issues. I will try to keep better track of things and do better next year. Many of us have no family to help us with these things or they are worse off than we are with needing help. A 'chat agent' isn't really what would help someone like me. If there's hardly anything to report to begin with,as in my case, a PHONE CALL walking me through the pages would be the best. This way I am not wasting time filing out things I don't need to and if there's a question I can ask along the way. The need to actually SPEAK with a person is real. Boomers and Gen-X like myself are not getting any younger and in coming years we are going to need a more 'walk alongside me with this' type model. We don't all have kids who can help or understand this stuff either. You are part of the village and I am glad you are here but please do focus groups to make your software senior friendly. For example, what is a digital asset or NFT? I don't think I have these things but many of us don't know what you are talking about. We need things to be simple. If we don't have a form perhaps you can say 'do we have your permission to contact your bank, pension etc?' It does save time even if you have to do this because what if we filled something out incorrectly, then you can get the information. Most of us initially want to do this by ourselves but would pay extra for something like this, to validate or get the forms needed. Lots of us have a rough year, as I have, and need a little extra hand holding when we cannot find forms. A service to get these forms would be invaluable to someone like me and also the myriad of other people who struggle with ADD or whatever issues that make it hard to keep track of things. Anyway I really tried my best. It kept asking me to review this or that, when nothing much has changed since last year. I'm scared i did it wrong. Many of us are dealing with huge anxiety right now because of the current political situation although many also may not admit to what I am admitting to but will also just kind of 'wing it' with being able to complete your forms even if it means a lower refund, because it is so nerve-wracking and some of us even in admitting we are having problems are even playing DOWN how bad these problems are because it is embarassing, scary and people make us feel ashamed or stupid for needing help. It is just plain awful to be fairly well educated but have some tax person volunteer at a library treat you like you are 'slow' because you are not confident about official forms or because NO ONE , parents included ever helped or taught you how to do things like this. Anyway hope what I have said is taken under consideration because I know I'm not the only one out here struggling. Hope you have a good week and remember you too will one day be a senior and might find things hard to figure out or need help, or even if it isn't age-related, you might have gone through some hard things and might want someone to walk you through the process so you can know you did complete it correctly.
All they do is tack on more and more charges. My "free" filing rapidly became a forced upgrade, which cost $40, then I had to pay for state filing, which was another $40, then, when I opted to pay those charges out of my federal return, they added ANOTHER fee to spend my own money. Horrible, horrible scam. Last year, they managed to LOSE my state return, and I had to refile through my local county treasurer.
TurboTax is the most econimical, accurate and efficient way to do your taxes!
I only wish TurboTax would have a little more separation between the Tax service we all came for and have a little more separation from the "IDentity and Info Theft and protection" that is woven through the process in a way that makes it confusing that you actually signed up and/or need the service to complete your taxes return. If I'm wrong then TurboTax needs a better user experience explaining exactly what is optional and what is necessary, especially in todays world of data and information security and management.
