A tax on paying taxes

TurboTax is an unfortunate necessary evil until the IRS streamlines the tax e-filing process. The product works, but why does a private company need to be so embedded in filing taxes? The IRS knows what we owe. Why can't they provide a free e-filing service for everyone?
