TurboTax: A Greedy, Deceptive, and Predatory Scam
If there were an award for the most shamelessly greedy, deceptive, and infuriating company in the tax filing industry, TurboTax would take the gold medal every single year. This company has spent decades perfecting the art of squeezing every last dime out of hardworking taxpayers while pretending to be "on your side." Spoiler alert: they are not.
The “Free” Filing Scam
TurboTax loves to bait customers with promises of “free” filing. You see the ads everywhere—TV, online, even in the software itself. But the moment you actually try to file? BOOM—suddenly, your “free” return isn’t eligible because of some obscure reason. Did you breathe while inputting your W-2? That’s an extra charge. Have a slightly uncommon tax situation? That’ll be $100+. Need basic support because their software is confusing by design? Oh, you better believe that’s an upcharge.
Intuit (TurboTax’s parent company) has spent years lobbying against free government tax filing options that would actually help people. They even deliberately hid the IRS Free File option from search results to keep customers from realizing they didn’t need TurboTax at all. That’s not just greedy—it’s outright deceptive.
Nickel and Dime You to Death
Let’s talk about pricing. TurboTax will hit you with every unnecessary fee imaginable.
State return? That’s extra.
Have a 1099? Oh, you need the “Self-Employed” package. That’s extra.
Want to talk to a human? That’s extra.
Need to file an amended return because their software led you astray? Guess what? That’s extra, too!
By the time you’re done, that “free” filing can easily balloon into a $200+ nightmare. And that’s before they try to sell you “audit protection” or other bogus add-ons designed to prey on fear.
A Broken, Frustrating User Experience
Even if you stomach the absurd pricing, the software itself is a mess. It constantly pushes upsells, making it impossible to get through your taxes without being bombarded by “recommendations.” The UI is intentionally confusing, designed to nudge users toward the more expensive versions at every turn. The worst part? Even when you pay for a premium version, it still doesn’t work properly! Countless users report errors, missing forms, and misleading prompts that result in misfiling.
They Don’t Want You to File Your Own Taxes
TurboTax’s entire business model is built on making tax filing more difficult than it needs to be. Instead of streamlining the process, they profit from confusion and complexity. They’ve actively fought against efforts to create a truly free and simple tax filing system in the U.S. because they know that the moment taxpayers have an alternative, they’re done for.
The Verdict? Avoid at All Costs.
TurboTax is a parasite on the tax system, an exploitative money grab that preys on confusion and fear. If you want to avoid being scammed, look into alternatives like IRS Free File (if you qualify), FreeTaxUSA, or even a local tax preparer—because literally anything is better than giving TurboTax your hard-earned money.
Final Score: 0/10 - A Greedy, Deceptive Mess.

ok but little disappointed.

I usually love turbotax. this was my 4th year using them and I was a little disappointed. I got a new bank account last year and needed to update my account information but there wasn't an option for that. Also while looking up how to do that, most of the information was posted in 2019 and wasn't helpful at all.

Turbo Tax rips you off 120$ minimum to fill out

I do enjoy using turbotax, but this year was extremely stressful. I feel like it was even more complicated than normal. The pricing as well... 120$ for just service and another 40 to deposit. Ridiculous.
Pros: I moved

I do not like this year's Turbo Tax compared to the past. It was not as straight forward as previously.
