Tax preparation companies like Intuit have spend over 20 years and millions of dollars to lobby against the development of a free government-run tax filing system. So that we have to pay them for the privilege of filing taxes.
As for the software itself:
- It is nice that the software can do Form 8938 but the part 3 has a really unintuitive table where it asks for the line on which something was reported. This would be way better if automated or at least given more description and examples. Currently it asks you to figure it out yourself. "The IRS requires you to identify where on your return you have reported income, deductions, and credits associated with other financial assets... You'll need to identify where these items are reported on your return."
- "We saved you X% by taking the standard deduction" - no need to take credit for something that is the default.
