I really like the convenience of filing with TurboTax but some of the monetization is very predatory. Having me select a free pack early on to then at the very end of filing rug pull half the return as a required upgrade to "deluxe" is annoying. I understand that filing a Schedule C is not covered by the free version but that should really be handled during the section C part or earlier.
The other more subversive thing I came across while filing this year was the $40 fee for paying tax filing out of the return. The fee is not explicitly listed anywhere on screen until you have reviewed and almost finished filing your taxes. At that point you can't go back and change how you choose to pay for filing. I had to find the downgrade package page and then click back into "review" to change how I pay for filing.
These and other obvious but much more passable things create an air of predation and underhanded tactics that degrade my trust in Intuit. I love the ease of use but the predatory anti-consumer monetization is a bit overboard. Having said that, unless I see another platform offering the same ease of use without the predatory tactics I will be here again next year and be happy to have the service.
