Brought this product 2 months ago. Used it twice and was very pleased. Love that it comes up high and is able it vent the steam from the front burners. The third time I used the vent it would not retract all the way down. Called the repair service department for the store I purchased it from. It took 3 weeks for the part to come in then while the part was being put in another part broke. Would I recommend this product? At this time no!
I bought this appliance as part of other 5 for kitchen remodeling. Using a retractable downdraft gave us bigger burners for same 30" cooktop. The drawback we found is that it was hard to retrofit using the existing vent location under the counter. The contractor had to build a adapter for it which basically took all the cabinet space under the cooktop. Perhaps, a more modular adapter would has help here.In addition, we had some problems with the on-off switch, which had to be replaced.
I've only used it a few times and did manage to knock over and crash a ceramic utensil holder when I lowered the vent, but I guess that's my problem. I did use it with a grill pan on the burner doing some small steaks with the fan on high and the smoke was definitely wafting to the ceiling, not being totally sucked in by the vent. But it has definitely solved a design problem since we have a very high cathedral ceiling in our kitchen which made an overhead vent impossible. But I must say, it looks so cool and makes me feel very Jetsons space age!
Pros: Design, easy to use, Innovative
Cons: not sure yet how well it sucks in all the smoke
Retractable downdraft clears kitchen odors and smoke quickly and efficiently. Three fan settings low, medium and high. Retracts out of sight on granite countertop. Matching Kitchenaid induction cooktop boils water in less than 30-60 seconds! Very happy we bought both Kitchenaid products. Customer service is great!

Love the retraction feature but the system often does not function properly. The unit will not come up properly with a simple push of the button. It requires holding the button and waiting for the system to engage then releasing the button. Proper timing and fiddling with it is frustrating because the system will disengage and retract instead of coming on. (Possibly an installation error!?) Also, downdraft system does not draw as much as I had hoped although it is much better than our old downdraft system (Jenn-Aire).
Cons: downdraft is insufficient, does not engage/retract properly
