Does not include some NYS forms causing much extra work. The Federal handles complex situations well. Business returns have improved greatly the past several years, LLC’s, SCorp, Trusts
More affordable than most competing software, but some data prompts, data entry, error checking, and data validation prompts seemed unnecessarily obtuse. In one instance I had to enter the information for the state return in a completely different section of the program instead of entering it on the same page while I had that tax form in hand. Worse of all the error checking didn't catch the ommission of the state entry for which there is always an amount if there is federal amount which I had entered. If I wanted an obtuse segregated outdated tax entry method that doesn't catch obvious errors I would just free file my state and federal taxes. The program is far from perfect and did not inspire much confidence that the return is complete or correct. If I hadn't used another program last year and compared returns I probably would have asked for a refund and gone back to that program.
Cons: Time consuming, Doesn't maximize refund, Hard to prepare
Prior to purchase / loading from disc sent in the mail, the program runs through a verification to make sure your system requirements are compatible which it did. One of these checks is operating system. After selecting version of tax software and making purchase I was unable to download program because it said I needed to have windows 10 for it to download. Had to purchase a new laptop because I did not want risk downloading new windows 10 and having compatibility issues with office features on older laptop with 7. Basically I found out my system did not meet requirements until after purchase.
Errors found in accuracy check were not what I selected under vehicle deductions for schedule C small business. Then phantom vehicle not entered would prevent efiling fed. Difficult to fix manually but once I discovered error not entered by me...and deleted vehicle...program let me efile. Took an hour to figure it out. Not good!!!
H&R tax programs worked great for preparing our personal taxes. I have purchased the business software to see if I can do this also but leave it to a CPA firm to do. Usually the background information provided me enough information but I had trouble understanding how to input K-1 information both into federal and state returns, first time doing this.
