If you're already familiar with Form 1040 and general tax rules, it's not much faster (if at all). Otherwise, I imagine it'd save a good deal of time. Either way, it does provide a sanity check and the convenience of e-file.
The UI could use some small improvements. If I jump from an arbitrary screen to the Income summary, then press "Previous" from there, I expect to go to one screen before the Income summary. Instead, it takes me to the screen before where I jumped from.
I also encountered a bug where entering an amount for miscellaneous income, then clearing it, would leave a "ghost" amount in the total income calculation. The only way to get rid of it was to start a new return from scratch. Moderately annoying.
Pros: Easy to install, Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund
On my w-2 box 14 had a small dollar amount, I added that and was then prompted for the reason for the monetary amount, it was AK-SUI, but that DID NOT appear on your dropdown menu, I tried "Other" but it would not stick so ended up deleting the small amount of money. Would not print when prompted at the end, I had to jump around and print from "Forms", thank goodness I had a simple return. It took twice the amount of time to do my taxes due to these problems, also inporting from last year when H+R did my taxes, could not figure out a simple way to import anything, it would have been helpful to get names addresses, things that don't usually change year to year imported easily, like by use of ss# or address.Would not recommend to an Alaskan due to AK-SUI issue
HR Block did not have the correct prior year (2016) 1040 return on file, contrary to their claim in the 2017 software. Consequently, the traditional IRA basis and the 2016 AGI were entered incorrectly, which caused the IRA to reject our return. The instruction on how to override the AGI were also incorrect. "Edit" screens and right click, for example, did not exist or work. The solution was only available in discussion groups.
I have been using H&R Block "Tax Cut" for many years. Super simple to use. Anyone can do it. Last year I used the Online version. This year I installed the desktop version. When I tried to import last years return there was no provision for importing data from the H&R Block site. Since I had already purchased and installed the desktop version I had to manually input the information from last years return. Not a huge problem but it seems that if I am using the same software from the same company there should be a way to pull in the data from the previous years return whether the online version or desktop version is used.
