Discerning taxpayers: Look beyond interview!

The H & R Block software's interview does an adequate job of gathering data for most tax returns but discerning taxpayers will need to look beyond the interview. For example, in the interview questions for completing Form 5695 (Residential Energy Credit), it only asks about solar energy, not geothermal heat pumps. Had I not known that there is a 30% federal energy credit for installation of geothermal heat pumps and gone into Form 5695 to fill it in manually, the H & R Block software interview would have led me to believe that, because I did not install new solar equipment, I did not have a federal energy credit. I would have missed out on the 30% federal energy credit for geothermal. The interview should be updated to ask about geothermal heat pump installation.
Pros: Easy to prepare
Cons: Doesn't maximize refund

Been using since it was Tax Cut!!!

I purchased as soon as available. Did not use until we received final documents (or notice thereof). Been using since the days it was Tax Cut. This year's version does have a few bugs but considering they have had to virtually rewrite the software, that's to be expected... and, they were easy to work through.
Pros: Easy to prepare, Maximizes refund, Easy to import documents, Fast

Hard to navigate

Have been using H&R for about 9 years now. This year the software seemed very hard to navigate if I had to go back and fill something in on a background form. I also thought some of the explanations weren't as complete. Overall, it just didn't 'feel' as good.
Pros: Fast
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

Does not cope with marriage to foreign citizen

Contains features for handling foreign income for bona fide residents of foreign countries. Does not have the capability to cope with a spouse who does not have a SSN. Of course, non US citizens don't have one but it seems logical than anyone filing married and having foreign bona fide residence might just be married to someone without an SSN. Overall, does not deal well with expatriate filers.
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

eFile rejection due to form computation error

The 2018 Deluxe version has a MAJOR math error on line 9 of form 2210 that prevented my return this year from being accepted by IRS. Wasted a LOT of time trying to research the complex rejection codes provided. SOME did not provide and explaination without calling/chatting w/ Customer Support -
Cons: Time consuming

This software package is exstremely user friendly. I’ll continue to use H&R Block tax software. You may pay a small fee but it’s worth every penny. State return is also excellent. Completely satisfied.
