The interaction with prior years returns makes this the top choice

Very clunky program

Been using them for years, and I'm pretty much stuck with their software, but they haven't made any improvements at all in user interface. It's a clumsy program that gets the job done, but should really be much more user-friendly. Their state programs are particularly weak.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I use H&R Block Basic every year to file my Federal taxes. The program is intuitive and easy to use, and I have never had any issues. The program imports your data from previous years, allows you to e-file, and points out things you might have missed. It is truly painless using this program to file your taxes. Highly recommended.

The 5498's are hard to determine and cause issues with entry. The questions and explanations don't help. Stick to the boxes and information on the forms. The average person doesn't understand the form. Also the software auto populates a prior year amount which calculates a tax you don't owe. Fix the form or the sotfware.

I've used the H&R Block tax software since the 1997 tax year. The wife & I have a very simple, straightforward return, and we've never had any issues with the accuracy of our returns over the years, nor have we ever been audited. I'd recommended H&R's software to anyone. It's simple and intuitive to use, yet thorough in making sure you don't leave anything out or any money owed you behind!

Have used this program on a Compac luggable since it was called PCTaxCut (early 80's) and have never had an issue with it. Very straight forward step by step procedure to get the needed information into the 1040 and associated schedules and needed forms.
Pros: Easy to prepare
