The software answers your questions and guides you through the process, and has a double check feature at the end to make sure you didn't miss anything. Use multiple years in a row and it saves your info from year to year.
I've been using H&R Block tax prep software since 2014. Before 2014 I'd been using TurboTax for many years, but that was the year that TurboTax tried to swindle its users by restricting the tax forms supported by their basic-level package. So I switched to H&R Block and never had any reason to switch back.
This year's H&R Block Basic is better than ever for my middle-complexity tax situation. Unlike some prior years, there were no errors found in the final check that necessitated erasing an inexplicable entry generated by the program into a tax form field. The level of "upsell" page displays also seemed reduced from previous years. I always use the Basic version because it is the cheapest while still incorporating all the tax forms an individual would ever need. I don't require whatever tax advice the more costly versions might offer.
Form 1116 extremely confusing. Way too much scrolling - No clear breaks between sections. For data entry purposes, break the form into clearly defined l sections. Then bring the sections together for reporting purposes.
Data review was confusing. Could not get past it. Asked for itemized deduction total when we used the standard deduction. Also asked for spouses AGI when we filed jointly.
I have used H&R software for the past 15 years. I have never had an audit with it. It is easy to use and inexpensive. I especially like its ability to pull in previous year's returns while maintaining all the addresses, amounts, etc. Definitely a time-saver. Another benefit is you don't have to enter financial information into the cloud like most of the "free" products out there. Can't imagine why someone would want to do that.
