Tax software is necessary if you want to do your own taxes. H&R Block software is thorough without a one question per screen approach. However, there software is not perfect and for more complicated returns a phone call may be required to resolve an input error notice. As an example, the first time I tried to respond to this rating, I could not get the program to accept my star rating choice. I tried a couple of days later and it worked fine. Now I find I can't respond to points 2 through 9 without clicking SUBMIT first.
