I've been using H&R Block Basic for years. I have a relatively simple tax return and it handles everything easily. As long as you remember to enter all your various 1099s, it's almost impossible to make a mistake and the error checking feature will let you know if you do.

In general, this can be used effectively by anyone who can read and understand basic instructions. I used Turbotax years ago and they tried to force me to install some software that I didn't want. H&R block has been my go-to software for personal tax calculations.
