I like Turbo Tax.

Turbo Tax has worked pretty well for me over the last several years. It seems to guide you through everything you need to do.

Unhappy with TurboTax in 2024

This is the 3rd time I have had to refile our 2024 Federal taxes through TurboTax. The first time I put the wrong SS# for my spouse (my error) but did not receive notice from TurboTax that the return was rejected. I only learned of it when going back into TurboTax and seeing a notice. I immediately made the correction and refiled. With the 2nd filing I have not received an email accepting or rejecting per TurboTax. I've now gone back in a 3rd time, found no errors and filed again through TurboTax. If the 2nd attempt had gone through TurboTax would indicated the return was already filed and not accepted the 3rd filing. I am very unhappy with this. If I incur penalties will TurboTax reimburse me?

RMD confusion

Everything was great EXCEPT: I have two regular IRAs, both of which required an RMD. I took the sum of the two RMDs from one IRA and zero distribution from the other one. This left the zero distribution IRA with no 1099-R from my financial institution (they say they are "not allowed" to send a 1099-R to an account holder when there is zero distribution). Therefore, I created a substitute 1099 R per your instructions. This created confusion as the substitute 1099 R showed no RMD from that institution and the program could not identify that the correct RMD had been timely taken from the other IRA. Therefore, the program erroneously calculated a 10% penalty for not withdrawing the RMD in a timely way. I had to file an amended return to straighten this confusion out and get a refund. The 1099 R form used the term "correction window" with no definition. I answered NO to question C as I did not use what I thought was a correction window. I had withdrawn the RMD from another IRA prior to December 31.
On the amended return I changed the NO to a YES to question C. (I did not do this on the original return as it felt like I was lying to the IRS to say I used a 'correction window' when in fact I did not, as I understood the term.) This allowed the penalty to be withdrawn and the penalty refunded (I think - I just sent it in and have not seen the refund yet.)
I spent two hours or more of research on this issue prior to paying for your expert advisor, who did not keep me straight on the issue on my original return. I am disappointed that I had to do an amended return. I am 84 and I think this is the first time I ever had to do an amended return. I have taken pride in recent decades for my ability to use TurboTax for my tax returns. This year, I am disappointed.
