TurboTax: Still good but had more issues this year

In general it worked well. I had three businesses to file and that part worked well. However, the problems this year seemed more significant than in the past. Specifically: 1. Importing from Charles Schwab ended up creating a blank 1099 with no information filled on it. This was not part of the tax package Schwab sent me, so I assume it was a Turbo Tax error. I had to delete the form. 2. The "print return" function did not work on my MacBook Pro. I ended up doing a "Save to PDF..." to get a copy of my return 3. One of my 1099-NEC forms had an entry in box 7, but none in boxes 5 or 6. Turbotax didn't catch this discrepancy until I tried to file, and then it wouldn't let me. Seems that it should have been caught in the "review your return" section.

Turbotax problems.

TurboTax does not handle farm rental properties well. The vehicle mileage cannot handle accelerated depreciation or section 179 applications. The error checking for IRA's and Required Minimum Distributions needs better explanations. It does not handle the RMD well when taken from multiple accounts.

Still not able to complete forms by importing

TTAX still can not import and complete K 1 s. Nor can it complete NC income Tax issues that are handled differently than the Fed tax deductions. THis should have been a no brainer, I have been using TTAX for 10 years and the program should be able to fill out these forms without me having to dig through past years TTax documents. Program failed to auto enter parts of the imported K1 and 2 1099 Div /int forms

Best way to prepare and file taxes

I have been using Turbotax every year since 1996 to prepare and file taxes. The program walks through all the issues, handles the math, correlates the main forms with the supporting worksheets, and checks for errors. For me, review of records and data entry here is easier and more efficient, (i.e. can do this on my own time) than preparing my records for an accountant- and far more cost effective. I itemize my deductions, and my return this year was more complex than usual re: a mix of W-2 income plus two businesses (Schedule C), office at home, sale of an income property (Form 1099-S), and IRA required minimum distributions. Turbotax walked me through it all. My call with their support staff to review and confirm was timely and helpful.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
