i have used turbo tax for years. this years version failed in every way. it lacked forms, step by step instructions, ease of use, and was even hard to just download and open. unless the stench of this experience wears off i will find some other way to file next year

Turbotax could do better!

Turbotax could be much better....Our return includes form 8606 for both my wife and I and this is an area where I needed to research for myself. For some reason, the initial return that Turbotax created did not have a Form 8606 for me and the Form 8606 for my wife was missing values on most lines, for some reason. We need Form 8606 for both of us, for the foreseeable future. Related to this, Turbotax seems to leave some lines blank that would be populated if doing the return without software. It has done this even when it is correctly doing the math and the proper rules and logic. It makes it harder to check or troubleshoot, which I think is important. I also found the form importation from third parties (e.g. Fidelity) to be very inefficient. Although the numerical data may have been correct, the addresses and ID#'s did not match the copies I had downloaded from the financial firm. I wasn't sure this would cause a problem, so I had to manually edit this, negating the efficiency of importing. It would also import some accounts (from common fin. firm) in groups that seem to limit editing or deletion of one and not the other account. Finally, I initially started using Turbotax as an online versionj this year. But it didn't seem to have any connection to my data from the preceding years of downloaded Turbotax use and the interface looked much different. It was like using a different product and the software is persistent in "upselling" as you go. I gave up on that and went to a downloaded version of Turbotax.. I don't know if I'll use Turbotax next year, at all. I really just want to electronically file for efficiency at the IRS. In my initial online effort, Turbotax estimated a 58 minute effort. This was not even close. With the problems above, it took me at least 10 hours to confidently file my Federal and State return with Turbotax.

Misleading product name and cover picture

Product works fine but the advertising was a little misleading. I bought what I read as TurboTax Deluxe + State. I saw the cover and bought it on the spot because it was on sale. After getting everything done is does let you do your state taxes, but charges you 25 bucks to e-file. If you read through the more detailed page of what's included with every package it does says that state e-file is sold separately and you only get a state "download" whatever that actually means.
TLDR: The advertising for this product is misleading and you DO NOT get to e-file your state taxes for free with TurboTax Deluxe + State PC download.

TurboTax Improvements

More information should be provided for filing State Taxes. Other forms needed to be sent for filing electronically, such as 1009-R forms. If needed or not and where they should be sent. More information should be provided concerning software updates that are installed after filing of taxes is made. What effect is there on the already filed taxes?
