Best software for taxes

I have used TurboTax for over 20 years and am a big fan of it, as well as Quicken, recommending it to anyone struggling with their taxes. Previously I had done taxes manually, using the tax forms and guides. The one critique of TurboTax that I have is that, at times, it is not clear what data should be entered and for what purpose. Last week, I discovered that several years ago, I had entered the information for IRA withdrawals for NJ incorrectly. Digging into this on other websites, I found that NJ does not tax IRA contributions, so these need to be subtracted during the calculation of withdrawals. Otherwise, contributions are taxed twice. Fortunately, this error did not result in a large overpayment of taxes to NJ. I raise it as an example of how TurboTax, at times, needs to be more clear on what data should be entered and the purpose of it. An improvement TurboTax has made in recent years is handling the portion of interest or dividends that are tax-exempt for a particular state. It is now clear what to do, and could be made easier by allowing a percentage to be entered, and TurboTax could perform the calculation. I hope that TurboTax keeps making great improvements!

Turbo-TAX is mostly easy to use

1099-R's did not have info requested in TURBO-TAX. Turbo-TAX should work with institutions that provide the 1099-R's to have all info available.
