Problems with Electronic Filing
on February 6, 2025

I feel confident using TurboTax to file my tax return. However, I am never able to file electronically due to an issue with my PIN number. I can't figure out how to find out what it is or reset it. Nor can I figure out where to pin in my IP.PIN from the IRS. The help screens are useless in this regard. If not for this problem, I would give TurboTax a 5.

There were times when the software would lockup for a minute or so. Also, the ability to go back and change information was cumbersome and difficult to find the correct screen to change it. Otherwise, the software does what it is designed to do.

FAILED_VALIDATION error persists after 3 years.

For the first time ever, I had a HORRIBLE experience with TurboTax. The process of preparing my taxes was easy as always (I have been using the product for ~20 years), but the process of submitting the return was a complete nightmare and after hours with CS was not resolved. Here is the scoop:
At the final step to transmit the returns, your product returned the FAILED_VALIDATION report and told me I needed to update. Your updates told me that my product was already up to date. During the subsequent hours with customer service, multiple attempts to fix things included (1) reinstall (2) reboot (3) Running a patch that manually updates the versions (4) Every variety of patch/install/reboot that could be imagined, (5) a repeat of the process on a different computer. None of these approaches worked.
The problem is at YOUR END. Apparently the validation during eFile and the check-for-updates routine consult independent sources of information regarding the update status of the product (I use the desktop version on Windows). Thus one enters an infinite loop of difference-of-opinion for every route to apply an update and the validation check while attempting to eFile.
A google search indicates that this problem has plagued your product for year since I saw posts about the exact same failure dating from 2022 until 2025. Despite all the recommendations and apparent cures posted by the public, the single knowledgeable post that I saw marked Wednesday as "doomsday" for TurboTax. According to that post, updated versions of the desktop TurboTax software are released on Wednesday and apparently the information referenced during eFile is updated before the information found in check-for-updates. This theory is further supported by the fact that FIVE additional people had posted exactly the same behavior on exactly the same day as I experienced the issue. I have several suggestions (which should have occurred to any intelligent programmer given years to mull over the issue) to address the problem:
(1) Work on your policy. Perform updates to the areas referenced by the check-for-updates area and the eFile area (a) at the SAME time and (b) in the middle of the night US time.
(2) Work on your product. It is simply a flaw that there should be two independent ways to determine whether the desktop version is up-to-date. If there was only one way to determine the validity of the version, all failures would be eliminated.
(3) Give your users the option to "File Anyway". Experienced users of TurboTax recognize that you update the product frequently. In fact, it is EXTREMELY rare that early filers are using the same version of the product as is hosted on April 15. Therefore, a version that is only slightly out-of-date is not a event that should completely halt the option to file. If the FAILED_VALIDATION error message had a "File Anyway" option, then your users who want to file during the brief interval while you're performing a woefully sloppy update, can just do it. You could possibly inform the users with a date-of-their-version vs the date-of-updated-version to allow them to make a more informed decision.
(4) Allow files from the desktop version to be uploaded into the online version of your product. Then the user does not feel that their time was entirely wasted and can act on it.
(5) Inform your agents to tell their customers that "Occasionally, while we're updating versions this trouble can occur. Please try again tomorrow when the updated version is fully posted and call us again if that fails."
In my case, on Thursday morning, Lo and Behold (!) there was a new version of the software waiting for me and I eFiled my taxes flawlessly. I just wish that the exasperation of trying to use your product on a Wednesday and the fact that I had to additionally take Thursday off from work (expecting to do my taxes using a competitors product) could have been avoided by any of the simple fixes listed above, none of which appeared in your product despite a three-year opportunity to apply such simple fixes.
Pros: My employment status changed this year

Great tool - but a few suggestions

Been using TurboTax for years and it's generally a good product. A little disappointed that a couple of times over the years my state tax return was rejected because the TurboTax software required updates. I'm an early filer and seems like the software isn't up to date early in the filing season. Also, it would be helpful if the program asked/prompted you about IP PIN. We shouldn't have to search where to enter the number. Given the problem with identify theft more people will be using the IP PIN security feature with the IRS. Thank you!

2024 Turbotax Download not easy to install

1) Could not initially install Turbotax download on my computer because Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Package was corrupted--took me two weeks to figure out how to fix it before I could install Turbotax. Never had this problem with the DVD version of Turbotax. 2) Should tell taxpayer his/her standard deduction before asking about itemized deductions--because of SALT limit of $10,000, more taxpayers are well below the standard deduction now.
