We have successfully used TurboTax for our federal and state returns for over a decade. Never a problem.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Turbotax is awful

2025 Turbotax is difficult to use. I have been using TT for a long time and it was easy to use but not anymore. All you are interested in is just selling additional services instead of creating a user friendly software.

it worked perfectly for me and my spouse to file.
however, my return has been rejected 2 times since i sent it the first time
i just sent it again for the 3rd time.
there were no updates available when i logged back into my return to re-send it.

Seems to be getting less user friendly each year.

I would suggest there is a lot of information imported from the prior year that is not being automatically filled into forms. This would save a lot time and frustration.

More annoying

More annoying every year. I don't think they review old areas at all, even if current changes could make something less clear. And just to get a download vs. online (which is clearly where they want to drive someone) takes effort. If you have errors, it points you to an area, but doesn't tell you anything useful. Had to rework/enter the entire thing, including clearing blanks, to figure it out. Fifty questions to get you to take their extra advice and prep. Annoying.

I'm a longtime user, but am planning to leave next year due to the $25 state e-file charge.

State filing fee is a cash cow
on March 8, 2026

Software works as expected. My issue is charging for state filing since the return is sent to the IRS who distributes it to the states. the Expense is in coding which i pay for when purchasing the software. There are no secondary transmission costs for the state so why charge other than grabbing a cash cow?
