Turbotax - tax filing simplified!

I find tax form processing and filing for both State and Federal returns using Turbotax is less daunting, more pleasant and timely. Also, the support staff responds quickly, respectfully and kindly as exemplified by your technical expert Anthony; his assistance today, 04-16-2025, via your direct contact 800-446-8848 was invaluable. However, I think your CD software download process is easier to use than the online arrangement. Thank you for your kind consideration of my comments.

Glitchy, frustrating, but gets the job done

I have used TT for over 20 years and it generally works. This year the software was glitchier than usual. There are always a couple of features where the software is in conflict with the code and you need to finangle a work-around and mail your documents because TT won't efile if it thinks you have an error (even when TT is mistaken). This year CA state software wouldn't display modules related to K-1 entries even though the completed federal return had addressed K1 reported income. Could not navigate to the necessary sections in either forms-mode, fully guided mode, or self-directed mode. Starting over was the only solution to get the software to function normally.
VA state software wouldn't allow correction of form to request direct deposit. Finally, was able to input direct deposit details after revisiting personal information entry multiple times. When filing I was asked to confirm my direct deposit details multiple times and onscreen TT confirmed that I was requesting my refund by direct deposit. But the software filed my return with a declaration refusing to use direct deposit and demanding a physical check. Annoying but no calamity.

Reliable but worse every year.

The interface seems to be getting worse every year. I've used turbotax to file my taxes for the last 15 years, so I am quite familiar with the process.
1. It is getting slow and bloated. I completed my return and I am on the final steps "we're listening" page. According to activity monitor TurboTax 2024 is using 4.5G of ram and Turbotax 2024 Web Content is using 3.3 GB of ram on M2 Pro MacBook.
2. Some imports didn't work and told me to try in October.
3. Import of 1099-B caused a table to be generated with 50+ entries that needed to be validated. Each entry has a pencil button at the end of the line, but that image is not visible unless you scroll to the right. The scrollbar is at the bottom of the page, so you need to scroll down, scroll right, and scroll back to the each entry. There was plenty of horizontal space, but resizing the window doesn't help to reflow the table. There is edit all option, but it doesn't allow to check the "none of these apply" checkbox that I had to click for each entry. This poor UI interface with sluggish behavior wasted an hour of my time with that view crashing at one point.
4. Backdoor roth conversion is so poorly implemented that there is this 3 step guide on how to do it - https://ttlc.intuit.com/turbotax-support/en-us/help-article/retirement-benefits/enter-backdoor-roth-ira-conversion/L7gGPjKVY_US_en_US I appreciate the guide, but the interface is unintuitive.
5. I needed to generate 2023 Form 8606 why can't I do it also in TT2024, but have to leave the ecosystem to do it?
6. There are frequent questions about what I have done or filed in a prior tax years. Given that the program has access to prior years these don't make a lot of sense. You should know what was filled since you have access to my prior year returns, located on the same computer.
7. At this point there should be AI integration allowing people to drop their PDFs and have them auto imported. Including figuring out cost bases when brokerages put 0 but provide additional information on another page.
8. There should be AI integration to be able to ask questions about context of return, how my last change affected my taxes, how I should do this and that. For example, the 1099R for Roth conversion had an additional page showing contributions and Roth conversion done on the same day. This should be enough for program to figure out what needs to be done. It was surprising to see my tax owed increase when I first entered that form and it took me a while to find the Backdoor roth conversion instructions.

Turbo Tax and it's Customer Service is excellent

Filling out the filling form was simply and easy. We didn't include a form needed so our return was rejected. One call to TurboTax we were given to an agent who walked us through refilling and within a few minutes all was well.
