Continued TurboTax Excellence

TurboTax continues to provide a very user-friendly, useful, thorough and complete tax preparation alternative that completely meets our needs. As a result, haven't checked the competition lately. Two comments on the program: 1.) The navigation has been dumbed-down a bit too much so had difficulty manually getting to the refund section and 2.) while the residential Energy Credit exactly followed the IRS guidelines, some additional explanation beyond the iRS wording would have been helpful.

As always, most of the return was very easy. I did have a lot of trouble with the 1099-NEC income worksheets, had to go back and redo them several time, although the information shown was accurate. Self Employment worksheets were also very difficult to complete. Same problem, having to enter identical information several times.

Turbo Tax prompts for info to be entered, has explanations if you need it and calculates when necessary.

Always easy to use ... been using for years. One thing I did notice is that I used to be able to do a dropdown worksheet for logging things like charity donations and work expenditures. I didn't see it this time.

I have self-employment income (Sch C), Medicare, commercial health insurance, LTC insurance, and a dependent with a marketplace plan. Calculating Self-Employed Health Insurance amount is pretty much a nightmare, since those items go into so many places. The first two get combined into a SEHI entry, LTC is entered separately, and 1095-A premiums in a 3rd spot (don't forget to associate with a business!). TT seems to have trouble combining all those. The QBI deduction was at first calculated without the 1095-A premium. Looked wrong, but hey, that gave me a larger deduction, and maybe that's the way it's done--TT knows best! Then as I started to file, tax due suddenly when up by $400 since now it's being included, which is what I would have expected. TT shouldn't have missed that for so long.
On Illinois tax return, there is no option given to apply refunds to next year's taxes.
Options on how to get a refund (paper check or automatic deposit) should be provided earlier, not as part of final filing. On another return, I wanted auto deposit of state tax refund, and had to go down the e-file route (which I didn't intend to do) to get the routing and account numbers on the form.
