I made a little mistake in my Fed Income Tax and it was rejected by the IRS. I was able to quickly fix the error with the help of Turbo Tax. The document.

OK, but mailing state is a problem

I've been using T-tax for years. I have a moderately complex tax situation - I teach music at multiple schools, play gigs which are 1099'd, etc. So using the gov't online free programs is not an option. I have grown used to it and in the past would have given it 5 stars. THIS year, I am very frustrated that it has made printing the state tax return (for me, MA; but I've been reading it's the same for other states) very difficult. If you e-file the federal, in the past you have always been able to simply check off that you'd like to print the state and mail it in. Not so any more. You have to backtrack through the federal process, pretend you are going to file the federal by mail (after you've efiled it), then it will give you the option of printing the state. It used to be straightforward, but obviously someone in the corporation figured they could squeeze us for more money by making it seem that we must file the state electronically. I was disappointed by this whole process, since I have been a loyal customer (T-tax and Quicken) for decades.

More problems with TurboTax in 20+ years

I had trouble downloading turbo tax. Caught in Intuit password roulette. After two days of efforts, I got the magic combination. Several times, it was extremely slow loading or stalling while loading. Once I save the file and quit Turbo Tax and once after saving the file, I got the colorful Swirl of Doom. The whirling continued all night long. The next morning , I emergency quit TT and talked to the TT Advantage CSR who was very patient and tried to GLANCE at the screen, but that would not work. She asked all the right questions but eventually decided that rebooting was the best solution was to turn off the computer and reboot from the start. That did work. I pretty much gave up on downloading from financial institutions bc the interface and security was very frustrating so I printed them and hand entered them on my own. Eventually everything worked and I was pleased with the final results, but the process was more troubled than it has been in all my history going back to MacInTax days. I think increased security (which I appreciate) was at the root of my frustration..
Pros: I bought or sold investments

All Changes are not improvements

I have used TurboTax since tax year 1995. That's 30 years. Over the years I have appreciated many of the changes. I do not like the GUI for the interest and dividends. It is infantile. I don't need a picture of a bank or a stock certificate. Go back to the 1099-DIV and 1099-INT listing. It is much easier. Imports add a whole new form, leaving the "form" from the prior year. Why can't import match up with prior years place holders?
The most troublesome thing for me this year is the inability to update TurboTax. It worked for a wild, but now It gets about 50% of the way and gets stuck. I have to shut everything down, restart my computer, then download the "super patch" file and run it, to move forward in TurboTax Deluxe.
Pros: I bought or sold investments
