Hi there - the Ultra Open Earbuds won't quite match the volume of traditional earbuds that sit directly in the ear canal, but will still supply enough volume for you to enjoy your music. As for phone calls, Bose recently released a firmware update (4.0.22) to improve the customer's call experience. Try installing the latest firmware and see if that helps. [This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I bought this a month ago and it sounds great. Very old fan of Boses. I’m not a fan of how it fit on my ears and projects sound based on that fit(more out of my ears than into). Wish I could have tried it on before buying.
