Very close to pour over quality, easy to set up, good for batch, excellent for single cup. Using Ethiopia beans and a Baratza Encore grinder. Highly recommend.
I would recommend this to a friend!

3mo review: Almost a great coffee single-cup brewer, but batch mode has a killer flaw and there are too many questionable Gen 1 decisions
on December 15, 2024
Posted by: AlberCoffee
I preordered in the first week and have used the machine almost daily since September. I really want to love it, and feel that a future Gen 2 product is going to be amazing. Fellow is just a few design fixes away from perfection.
Let's get the good out of the way... it makes a great single-cup of coffee that is nearly indistinguishable from my pour overs. The engineering and precise control of the water temp and flow rate are phenomenal. From a couple of meters away, it looks great next to my Ode Gen 2 grinder. While the app is still buggy, I prefer to control the machine via the knob and that works well.
The list of downsides just makes me feel like a beta tester... (1) The carafe and lid are so badly insulated that batch mode should not be advertised as a feature. This is a hard fail. Even if I prewarm with hot water in a house with 70F+ air temperature, the temp gets tepid within 20 minutes. Instead, I brew multiple single cups or use my trusty Cuisinart automatic drip maker when there are guests. I would love to test a Gen 2 carafe if it becomes available...
(2) I cannot keep coffee warmer for longer by using my own carafe or larger insulated container. The area below the basket is too short for even a regular sized travel mug.
(3) So much plastic! My wife immediately wanted to send it back. I can somewhat tolerate the cheap feel and looks, but the use of black plastic in direct contact with hot liquid is inexcusable due to the known health risks (no, food grade black plastic is not safe). The brew basket and chamber are all black plastic. The silicon seal that prevents steam from hurting your cabinets is a great design feature, but inadvertently means that you are condensing hot steam on the interior plastic that then drips into the basket. Yuck.
(4) Cold brew doesn't work due to a software problem. I've been waiting for a firmware release that fixes it.
(5) The basket design needs work to solve the post-brew drip problem. Forcing the user to wait 1 minute in a final drip phase for only 10-15 drops is not a solution. And, why does water leak out when you open the lid and the condensed water stuck on the silicon seal drips down? (trick: keep a random cup underneath when you aren't using the machine)
(6) Why oh why does the app require me to give it my phone's location data, then complain when I disable the privacy permission? The Aiden software apparently wants to adjust to your location's altitude, but this can be done in other ways without invading privacy.
So, no effective batch brew, health risks with black plastic, buggy software, and annoying drip problems. But, it makes a great single cup of coffee that saves me 5 minutes versus a manual pour.

Not worth it so far…..

Sleek look, but pain in the butt to get brew right and to clean (coffee grinds accumulate on the underside of the top lid and no easy way to clean it). Had high hopes but seems expensive for what you get.
Handle on the kettle already came loose by simply rinsing it out, looks like a cheap assembly to the handle.

5 star batch brew, sad single-dose brew
on September 26, 2024
Posted by: Alec
Overall, I am really happy with Aiden as a batch brewer and disappointed with the single-dose brew. For context, for the past 5 or 6 years, my coffee routine was a daily single-dose v60 pour over, light roast, acidic/fruity notes. I have some family moving in with me and need a batch brewer that's on par with my v60 experience. For single-dose, I'm going to continue v60ing.
I'm not sure if Fellow makes my review public, but if they do, I'll be sure to update the review as I use the brewer over time.
Pros:
(+) Batch brew flavor quality: The most important criteria for me, and it's a big W! The flavors have been delicious, sweet, fruity, all the good things, from 500mL to 1500mL and in between. Honestly, it may be slightly better taste than my single-dose v60, which is exactly what I was looking for. (+) Ease of use: The removal water tank is goated. I like the wheel knob and the digital display. Configuring a scheduled brew is foolproof. I am glad I don't need the app to get certain functionality, as I generally avoid using my phone for tasks that don't strictly require it. (+) Misc: The water-tight seal of the brewing chamber and the carafe indeed prevent any steam from escaping when brewing *with their carafe*. I really appreciate their design effort here, as I only can fit this in my kitchen underneath a wooden cabinet. (+) Aesthetic: Looks great. I saw some reviews on reddit saying it feels cheap. I could understand that criticism, mainly about the plastic flaps for the water tank, but I don't mind.
Cons: (–) Heat retention: The carafe doesn't keep the coffee hot for super long if there's not a really big thermal mass in there. For example, with about 200mL leftover sitting in the carafe 2 hours after brewing, it was not even what I'd call warm. If we're drinking it right away, it's obviously fine. And I definitely don't want the hot plate burning the coffee all day so I understand the design choice. But IMO not super functional for long term heat retention. (–) Single-dose brew: So far, the flavor is a big miss. Tastes like burnt, 1-dimensional, fast-food coffee 😭. I have been meaning to play around with a coarser grind size and/or the default brew settings, but I'm not super motivated to iterate further given my next point... (–) Daily cleaning: Not a big deal for batch brew. But for single-dose, the amount of things to clean is a chore. You have to rinse and dry the basket, dry the basket seal with a paper towel, wipe off under the carafe if coffee drips there, rinse and dry the carafe. And weekly/monthly when I want to properly clean with soap, none of the used components are dishwasher-able. Again, this is IMO acceptable for batch brew, but comparing to the total cost in time of using a v60, it's not even close. Admittedly, after thinking about it, I don't think it's possible to beat a v60 routine in terms of total cost of time while maintaining the same taste. (–) Misc: The water-tight seal straight up does not work if you brew into your own mug. There is so much steam going on the bottom side of my cabinet from a single brew. You need to use their carafe if you want a water-tight seal. Maybe that doesn't matter for your usage. And I think that's a near impossible thing to design. I just wish it was more explicitly advertised. (–) Misc: This is a (hopefully fixable) nitpick, but I don't like in guided brew how you have to insert the basket before it will tell you how much coffee to grind. When I add the grounds, I put the basket out on my counter to add the grounds to make sure if any grounds miss the filter/basket, that they're easy to clean off of my counter rather than on the plastic parts of the Aiden. My habit has been to take the basket out when I start doing guided brew, and then the guide forces me to reinsert before telling me how much coffee to grind. I wish there was a setting to override the behavior. Maybe they can add it with a firmware update. Very minor complaint though.
Conclusion: I'm happy enough to keep the machine for its high quality batch brew. Although it's a bit overpriced as I won't be using the single-dose brew much at all. I wouldn't highly advocate this brewer to friends, but I'd say it at least deserves to be in consideration.
Sorry for the critical review. It's a new and hyped product and I wanted to make sure there's some content out there for shoppers.

Not ready for market

Very inconsistent machine. I have two of these and this issue is not isolated to just one. There have been multiple issues with the Aiden and it’s not reliable. I love Fellow products but they released this one too early. Too many issues and all I have done consistently is loose good beans to bad brews.
