My new favorite bar mount

I don’t normally write reviews but this product exceeded my expectations. I was using the Quad Lock bar mount, but after watching a couple YouTube videos I made the switch to Peak Design. I loved my Quad Lock mount but the Peak Design mount is by far my favorite. The ease of removing my phone from the mount one-handed was a game changer for me. Great product!

Got the charging motorcycle bar mount a week ago. Install was simple especially if you have an extra usb near the front of your bike. Make sure to order the right cable to fit usb port. Total quality from Peak Design but you already know that if you purchase products from them. Went on one ride so far and it worked perfectly. Only once did I attach the phone without checking that it “Clicked in”. the magnet will hold it until you hit a bump. Phone went into on coming traffic and was ran over by at least three cars by the time i got to it. The everyday case protected it and the only damage was the screen saver. Clicked the phone in and finished the ride with out issue. Quality products can’t fix operator error.

Works great quality of construction is excellent you can feel very confident that it will keep your phone in place. Only down side is that with a larger phone Samsung 24 ultra it can be a little tricky to get it disconnected from the holder at first but after you get the hang of it no issue. This wouldn't prevent me from buying again in the future.

A Mixed Bag of Innovations and Inconveniences

I used the Motorcycle Bar Mount V1, which I loved, especially the hassle-free case that came with it. When I decided to upgrade to the Motorcycle Bar Mount Charging Qi2, I faced some issues.
Let’s start with the positives:
- The SlimLink connection remains secure and hassle-free, just like the previous version.
- The new ball-and-socket design allows for flexible positioning of the phone, which is a significant improvement.
- Assembly is as easy as before, making it a convenient upgrade.
- According to Qi2 specifications, the wireless charging supports PD, which means it can fast-charge devices. However, this feature is likely only supported with a USB-C connection, possibly the SAE connection, and definitely not the USB-A connection.
- The new ball-and-socket design allows for flexible positioning of the phone, which is a significant improvement.
- Assembly is as easy as before, making it a convenient upgrade.
- According to Qi2 specifications, the wireless charging supports PD, which means it can fast-charge devices. However, this feature is likely only supported with a USB-C connection, possibly the SAE connection, and definitely not the USB-A connection.
Now, let’s address the drawbacks:
- The cable is excessively long, which is the least significant issue. Considering that the USB-C or USB-A connections on most bikes are close to the instruments and handlebars, there’s no practical need for almost 3 feet of cable. While you can tie it off, it’s still a hassle and can make the bike look messy, especially on naked bikes like mine.
Second and most glaringly, the wireless charger mount has a fixed 4-inch cable extending from the back, and it’s proprietary. If the cable weren’t fixed, I wouldn’t mind the connection. However, since it’s fixed, the entire system is vulnerable to water damage. You must plug in the included USB-C cable to their proprietary connection, but then what? If you park your bike outside on a rainy day, you have to figure out how to protect the USB-C connector from the elements. Personally, I have to stow the cable under my seat, which means I have to take it out every time I want to ride, secure it with cable ties, and then reverse the process when I reach my destinations. This adds approximately 5 minutes of unnecessary preparation to every single ride. And I can’t even unplug the cable from the proprietary connection, despite some half-hearted attempts. I’m not sure if it’s recommended to try unplugging it, but even if it’s meant to be removable, you only get so many of those before the connection gets damaged. Since it’s proprietary, there aren’t any aftermarket parts to waterproof the connector when it’s not connected. At least you can buy third-party waterproof caps for USB-C and USB-A connectors. I don’t understand why they chose this design when there were other, far better options. By choosing this design, they’ve eliminated any notion of permanence for the mount on a bike because it’s not waterproof. Other brands have opted to have a USB-C connector integrated into the mount, making it as simple as unplugging the USB-C cable and stowing it. A cap for the USB-C connector attached to the cable would be ideal. I hope that Peak Design makes a third version of this mount that includes wireless charging and a more permanent waterproof design. As it is, I can only recommend this to people with USB-C connections that are secured in a place safe from the elements.

Optional cable lengths needed

I waited a long time for Peak Design’s wireless motorcycle charging head to come to market and replace my wireless Quad Lock setup. After participating in the Kickstarter campaign, the product was finally delivered yesterday. First impressions: I love the simplicity of the design (particularly the vibration isolator) and the ease with which my phone attaches and detaches from the wireless charging head. My only criticism is the lack of choices for length of the USB cable. Measured at 42 inches, the “1-meter” cable that’s included is WAY too long for my needs. Unfortunately, because of the proprietary waterproof connector, I'm limited to this single option (whereas QL's wireless charging head ships with three cable lengths, including a 20” cable that fits my setup perfectly). Inasmuch as my BMW’s factory USB charging socket is located right below the TFT display, and considering the additional 5-inch pigtail already attached to the Peak Design charging head, a shorter USB cable (around 15”) would be a fantastic option. It would be great if there were more choices for the cable length to better suit different users’ needs. For now, I’m stuck with more than 2 feet of extra cable, which detracts from the minimalist design.

Great mount, questionable connectors

A well designed product. Super solid when mounted, secure connection to my phone and the damper functionality is just right (I can still read my screen while riding).
The only gripe I have is with the wired connection. The wire is permanently mounted to the charging base so if it gets damaged, the entire charging base is toast. And the barrel connector that joins the unit to the USB cable is VERY delicate. I don't intend on separating it now that's it's attached so hopefully it'll continue to work.
