Issue with Form 1116 Foreign Tax Credit
on February 20, 2025
Posted by: Rick MVPSM
Having issue with form 1116 foreign tax credit, under dividend income. Under report foreign dividends you enter the amount received. Then you must select from either Mutual Fund/RIC or other. My income comes from a stock position so I click other. I then input the country on the next page. TurboTax will populate form 1116 in column B. When checking the return I get an error on form 1116 Column A due to no input. I manually input column A with the country name then have to re-enter the gross amount. This is rather odd. I went back and just used RIC input. I'm not sure this is correct.

I've used this since 1992. You need to produce a Mac version of the software. Windows isn't the only computer system out there.

TurboTax would not save form with signature!

I would give it 3.5 stars. Everything was okay if you are accustomed to using TurboTax, and tax preparation. It is not all that intuitive or easy to use for non accountants or those not experienced with tax preparation. You have to know your stuff. Then when I followed all the steps for signing form 8453-PE to be filed with my return, it did not appear in my final return that was filed. It showed on the attachments in TurboTax.

I have never had any problems with using TurboTax products. The format is straight-forward and I have come to come to rely and depend on the accuracy and completeness.

TT is likely the best program out there but it is far from a total solution for business taxes. If you're not familiar with tax filings and have questions regarding which forms are required for your business, seek professional advice. TT regularly overlooks forms required for my business filing. It constantly updates but seems to never be quite up-to-date with the latest requirements. If you have any special circumstances, seek professional advice - not advice from TT.

5472 filling is not an option

I was told Turbo Tax will work for filing return, but, it does not do 5472 form. I feel my money is wasted since I will have the requirement to fill 5472 each year and I have the software with lifetime subscription.
