TurboTax Business was lacking

I have happily used TurboTax Individual for 25 years but was disappointed with TurboTax Business that I used as a trustee for a family trust. It lacked the running tally on the top, was not intuitive, did not have explanations for all areas, and there was no option to hand off to an expert. It was more expensive and did less.

TurboTax Business - NO E-file for North Carolina

Totally unacceptable that the paid for Desktop version of TurboTax Business does not allow you to electronically file (E-file) the North Carolina Sub S tax return CD-401S with your Federal Return. I have been using TurboTax for Individuals since 2006. This is my first time completing a corporate return with TurboTax Business and not being able to E-file the standard Sub S Corporation (CD-401S) return to North Carolina is inexcusable. In addition, you cannot pay the standard Franchise Tax Fee through TurboTax either. Had to go through the time and trouble to print and mail the NC Return then go on the NCDOR website to pay the fee.
Pros: I bought or sold investments

Broken for Wi Returns
on April 15, 2025

Doesn't allow Wisconsin efile for trusts. Asks for a pin number that doesn't exist and that WI doesn't require. Also insists that I add what foreign provinces my investments are in even though the answer is none. I'm going to have to file an extension and hire an accountant to do my taxes

Better options available

Needed to use the desktop version to file for a trust as the online version doesn't support it. Desktop software supports only a few brokerages for importing 1099 statements so the vast majority of documentation on TurboTax capability is incorrect for this version and is very misleading. Additionally, there is no way to attach a pdf to a return to manually provide supporting documentation for capital gains transaction summaries and this lack of a statement was not recognized by the 'error check' prior to e-filing (despite autofilling 'see statement' on form 8949), so I now expect a notice from the IRS requiring additional documentation.

Not Great for Estate Taxes
on April 15, 2025

The help for first-time users is not great. I am filing for an Estate, and multiple times was presented with screens informing me that I had choices such as how to deal with a loss (carry forward, carry back) and then simply told what forms to use, but no ability to walk-thru doing that. Then my e-file was rejected and I was simply told a field was wrong, but no link to edit the field or any guidance of how to fix it. In the end, I was forced to print out the forms and file by mail because e-file failed repeatedly with no discernable way to fix. Very poor.
