When I started working with this program I thought there were to many forms filled out. Some had no data. Printing the returns ment 20 to 30 pages which I felt was way too many forms, most of my tax returns were pretty simple with not much income. I guess I'll see how everything works out. If there are no audits then in the long run I'll be happy to use the program again. I had six returns to do, Federal and State.
Here's the thing about H&R Block software...I've used it for several years (when TurboTax got too big for their britches and prices themselves out of my market). My business taxes are relatively simple; a couple of small LLCs and an S-Corporation. Import is smooth and easy year to year and the interview is straightforward. However it ins't idiot proof. You pretty much have to know what you're doing each step of the way, else you find yourself in an unrecoverable situation. Depreciation is complicated, and every year I find a glitch or two somewhere. This year, the program wouldn't take 'no' for the answer on producing a balance sheet. Is is perfect - no, not by far. Is it better than TurboTax - also no...but it's 1/2 the price and for one money I get personal premium and business software with enough prepaid e-files to do business, personal and both my kid's 1040EZ.
The 1040 program was excellent, as always. But the 1065 program for partnerships was absolute chaos. The instructions were insufficient, and ultimately I found myself filling out schedules I did not need. Finally, when it got to the review process, error messages kept appearing, and several times the program would not allow me to make the changes and kept repeating the error message when I tried. Because I couldn't fix the errors, I could not even start the state program. In the end, I downloaded the forms from the IRS and Massachusetts DOR and filled them out by hand, finding them much easier to understand the old-fashioned way.
Method of picking linked forms/lists is cumbersome. 'Copy 1', 'Copy 2' not very descriptive. Spent a lot of time on a Schedule C line 20 before I realised my entry was invalid. The software let me attach a list, but flagged as an override. I had to file VA taxes on the 15th. I had no option to file Federal at a different time so I had to pay my tax 4/15 instead of July.
When you choose to file for the extension until July 15th the software proceeds with making you pay when you submit. You don’t get the extension. Bye bye H and R block! Never again!
I've been using H&R Block's tax software for over 10 years. They improve it's function every year. Very little improvements are required in the program each year, even though the tax laws change all the time. H&R Block have always kept good pace with them. The only thing they haven't addressed is the home office deduction when it interfaces with multiple schedule C forms. It doesn't seem to understand or ask the right questions as if it only thinks there could be one schedule C, but then later makes totals out of fields that need splitting and separation. A minor complaint, but one worthy of one star less than perfect. Get that fixed and I'll give you all 5 star!
