I have used H & R Block Software for many years. I have been audited once and I got a refund after the audit. There are a few glitches that I have had to work through and probably no fault of the software but just time-consuming.
(1) After many years w/Turbo-Tax, switched to H&R Block for 2014 tax-return. Have mostly been satisfied, but ran into new issues this year. First, discovered that HR'16 would not launch on my old MacBk Pro-- and there is NO Apple upgrade for its OS. Ended up having to buy a new laptop in order to do my taxes. (Not H&R's fault, but would have been helpful to know the "Min. OS required" ahead of time.) After moving to new laptop, could NOT launch prior year's H&R'15 in order to look up how I'd handled items before-- and lots of depreciation details did NOT carry through. Had to go back to old laptop and save/print PDF's in order to look things up. (2) A general problem that I have EVERY year: how to decide where BEST to take certain deductions, where there's a choice. E.g: Long-term care Insurance.... Schedule A Medical? Schedule C Sole-proprietor Business? Self-employed Insurance?... etc. Would appreciate seeing a discussion to help me know what the issues & trade-offs are. (3) Massachusetts State Return: found several lapses... e.g: concerning MA rules on Health Insurance. We used to need a special tax-document that was mailed out by insurance company by Jan 30th, for preceding year's tax-return, to prove that we had medical coverage. I didn't think I had rec'd that letter and wasted a lot of time tracking it down. Finally called BlueCross/BlueShield and was told that bec. I had Medicare, I didn't need that letter-- in fact they did NOT send that letter-- because Medicare is the "Primary" insurance. The H&R software did NOT point that out &, furthermore, though I followed the on-screen instructions that said I only needed to enter my Medical# for "private" insurance, I was later forced to go back to add in my Medicare info when the software ran its final "Check-up" looking for flaws or errors. Minor stuff, perhaps, but showed that H&R had not invested enough effort in MA state return.
When I tried to submit my return it said that I had to do a software update first. Very strange since it made me update the software when I first opened the program. After the software update it took me all the way back through the filing process and made me pay the state filing fee again in order to file my return so I have been double charged. This is UNSATISFACTORY.
Your program caused my 2016 federal return to be rejected because the software took an AGI from a fake 2015 return . The fake2015 return was generated with your software and had never been sent to the irs or electronically signed. The Font size is a pain to change and requires me to adapt my display rather than program adapting to my display settings.
I have used H&R Block program for years. I would never use any other software. Some changes they made this year made it more difficult to get taxes done in a timely matter. But above all love there tax software.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to fix issues
Pros: Easy to install, Maximizes refund, Easy to import
I like HRBlock software because the system does a lot of work for me. The live person support is excellent. Although I have used the software for three or more years, this was the first year that I was unable to successfully upload the program. No worries, when I called the company, they downloaded another copy for me!
