I have been dreading doing my taxes myself, I have always dropped them off with a CPA I know. Since I closed my business last year I thought that I should do them myself. I answered the questions, filled in the blanks (not all of them the first time) and told it to send it in. It caught the blanks that I missed and I efiled my return. It centainly doesn't take a rocket scientist or a CPA to do your taxes. I recommend it.
I've been using H&R Block tax prep software for many years. Prior years' apps had bugs in various data entry fields and with fonts, and I'm glad to see most, if not all, of these have been resolved. The program seems highly stable, accurate, and thorough.
However, I did run into a very bothersome issue this year (2018). My investments include an index fund that turns out to be a Publicly-Traded Partnership (PTP), which is reported on a K-1. The program flat-out told me that "it couldn't handle this complex tax situation" and that I was pretty much on my own. Block, PLEASE fix this for next year. Increasing numbers of us have to deal with these K-1 "partnership" situations when owning funds.
This tax software has the worst "GUI" I HAVE EVER Used for tax software. When you try to make Corrections to the schedules, the software says software says make the changes below, but it will not allow you to. it references the wrong year when trying to calculate information for next year's W - 4. It says 2011, not 2018 or 2017. Really poor.
The software will not let you put correct depreciation for vehicles in, if you have not Used the software before but have had prior business depreciation. the software must allow for a person who has already had accumulated depreciation to enter what the prior years depreciation was, before The individual use your H&R Block software.
the GUI interface referenced above, is very jumbled and poorly is very jumbled and poorly displayed on the screen, and I have a wide screen monitor. everything stays in 1 Corridor in the middle of the screen and you can't make it larger or get rid of the overlapping edges of the screen.
I was truly upset after paying for my software, non-returnable, at the poor level of quality this software is To view and to work with. I expected a much higher quality and more professional software based solely on your name and the fact that you have been in business for years And years. I get all the way to the end of the Entries and finish my return and now your software is telling me that I have to put this number in this form and not number and not form and don't forget to put another number your software is telling me that I have to put this number in this form and that number and that form and don't forget to put another number in another place.... why doesn't your software carry the numbers from K1 and other 1099 forms through to through to all of the appropriate schedules? The software is absurd and lacking.... and now, I wake up the next morning to find that your software has not even text anything obviously because my form has been rejected by the IRS.
When entering the K1, you have code sections which are valid codes and the letters available in a drop down boxes, but at the end of the return you say they're not valid codes. just unbelievable.
