Program for federal tax was okay but not very user-friendly. Program for Maryland state tax was difficult to use when the standard deduction is used. The estimated tax payment for the state was difficult to enter.
Overall, the text size in the displays is too small and difficult to read. Surprisingly, the program does not offer a large text size option.

I have been purchasing Kiplinger's "Tax Cut" (Spelling?) since the last decade of the last century, to when to when the name changed to H&R Block sometime in the beginning of this century, and it has never lost its comprehensive quality, accuracy and efficiency. I recall sometime during early 2000's, I thought to possibly venture, using TurboTax, but at that same time, there was some kind of an error reported in that program that messed up some people's tax preparation... so that quickly changed my mind, and so I never left the program and have continued with it to this day. There was even a period early on when I could not find "Tax Cut" anywhere, and it seemed that always, there was Turbotax everywhere. Even some stores seemed to push out Tax Cut and only carried Turbotax. Thankfully, over time, you developed it and sent it out as a disc to now, become an online download. I guess now that I have been an ongoing user, the program, now automated, is ready for download, which of course makes it more convenient. I did move originally from the Basic program to Home & Business and now more consistently, Premium, as I did some self-employment and rental. I have settled on Premium as it covers everything I need at this point. Likewise, all of the old videos and multiple bubble info has over the years informed my income and expense understanding of what IRS expects, with all yearly changes, etc. and has equally helped and informed me knowing how to essentially manage my financial activities, etc. as an unexpected set of side lessons or "training" in financial management. While I know that taxes can be done online, I prefer the standalone product, that does not rely on internet when it is not working (I live in a rural area), or the ability to save and store, so that I can easily retrieve it when necessary. In addition, with some programs tapping into the "cloud", I prefer not to go there. Though not foolproof, should I say that nothing is, as I have had hard drive failure in the past. Interestingly enough, even when those things occur, I do not believe it has ever scrambled or corrupted, or caused any failures in my tax preparations, which has been great. Certainly, while there was a learning curve I had to navigate at the beginning per the program and then of course, over years of use, because of all of the variables in tax preparation just because of the nature of it, over time, I have become accustomed to so many of the nuances. Another positive, there are many of the questions (generated by the tax code), that do not really apply to me, so that I am not meandering in uncharted territory. H&R Block indicates in these cases, terms like "not common" or "most uncommon" or some terms like that, to indicate, essentially, if you do not know what this is, then you probably do not do it or it does not apply to you. Therefore, in some regards, the program is intuitive, anticipates, or acts on entries of course. Overall, with just a few snags, over the years, the program has been the best, and like nothing else, since we have to do taxes every year, it is the only program, other than my PC’s operating system, that I have consistently used, perhaps for nearly 40 years. This year, for the first time, I am going to try to do my daughter’s first taxes as a HS student as a basic 1040. I am not sure how that will work out, but I am going to try.

For the second straight year, when I go to file, it requests my credit card number then won’t update. Each time I try, I get a charge again. So far this year I have called 3 times for new files so I can file and the CC charges were removed. Last year I paid twice to file state returns with no relief despite repeated calls. The update process is flawed and makes filing more difficult and it takes more time.

Worked well overall but had glitches. Sometimes it would assume I had income or deductions I didn’t have but when I’d try to uncheck it, it would say it would cancel it later. Also it told me I needed to enter a date for how long I’d had a home equity loan or lived in my school district but the fields wouldn’t let me enter the dates per the required format. Thought I lived in a school district which charged income tax which was wrong.
