I sold a piece of property that had been in the family for a long time, and the software walked me through the forms needed to properly report the gains. I don't think a paid preparer would have done anything different, saving me the usual fees!

We always download the H&R Block Premium software for our taxes. This was the first year I had Required Minimum Distributions and was certain that I had withdrawn the correct amount from my IRA. But the H&R software recommended that I re-check to make sure I had met the minimum distribution requirement. The recommendation caused quite a bit of worry and uncertainty. I finally decided to ignore the recommendation. This was also the first year we decided to e-File. After checking and re-checking our return we were ready to e-File on April 14. Our first attempt at e-Filing was rejected after a long period of waiting for some kind of response. We received an "Unable to Connect" error message even though the program had just reported that it had successfully tested our internet connection. The error message suggested that I check the internet connection on my end, which had just been verified by the software. The program suggested disabling my anti-virus and firewalls, which I did. It made no difference. Subsequent and numerous attempts to e-File were still rejected. After nearly an hour of continuous attempts to e-File our return, our return was finally accepted by H&R Block, much to our relief. Tax time is stressful enough without problems e-Filing our tax return. Especially after we learned that the problem was not on our end of the connection after all. Next year we may go back to printing our return and mailing it to the IRS. We have become very familiar with the H&R Block tax software interface and plan on continuing to use it, but at this time we do not have a lot of confidence in the e-Filing function.

It didn't interface with the Mac well and it was a hard to update. Good data, not always explanations. I didn't qualify for the home office deduction but it was hard to know why just from the program.
Cons: Hard to import documents

I have used this software for years but couldn’t file on the 14th this year. HRB servers were down and it cost me work on Monday because I couldn’t file until late Monday the 15th. Could I file earlier? No, not when you owe money. HRB should give everyone a refund for the software this year.
Cons: Hard to prepare
No, I would not recommend this to a friend.

I had issues downloading the state program and didn’t want to get double charged. Same with filing. Filing went through but program had error so I couldn’t get any update.
Cons: Time consuming, Hard to prepare, Hard to import documents

I have 5 rental units in 2 buildings, one of which I live in. TurboTax was not as good as HR Block in allowing me to divide expenses on the building I live in but rent 2 smaller units that compromise 1/2 the building. The cost was also lower than TurboTax.

I have used H&R Block Tax Software for 10+ years and never been disappointed. In recent years I have needed to use the Premium version since it enables me to handle the tax information for a second house that I rent out. Does a great job.
